The book represents a basic support for a master course in electromagnetism oriented to numerical simulation. The main goal of the book is that the reader knows the boundary-value problems of partial differential equations that should be solved in order to perform computer simulation of electromagnetic processes. Moreover it includes a part devoted to electric circuit theory based on ordinary differential equations. The book is mainly oriented to electric engineering applications, going from the general to the specific, namely, from the full Maxwell’s equations to the particular cases of electrostatics, direct current, magnetostatics and eddy currents models. Apart from standard exercises related to analytical calculus, the book includes some others oriented to real-life applications solved with MaxFEM free simulation software.

Presenting topics that have not previously been contained in a single volume, this book offers an up-to-date review of computational methods in electromagnetism, with a focus on recent results in the numerical simulation of real-life electromagnetic problems and on theoretical results that are useful in devising and analyzing approximation algorithms. Based on four courses delivered in Cetraro in June 2014, the material covered includes the spatial discretization of Maxwell’s equations in a bounded domain, the numerical approximation of the eddy current model in harmonic regime, the time domain integral equation method (with an emphasis on the electric-field integral equation) and an overview of qualitative methods for inverse electromagnetic scattering problems.Assuming some knowledge of the variational formulation of PDEs and of finite element/boundary element methods, the book is suitable for PhD students and researchers interested in numerical approximation of partial differential equations and scientific computing.

The European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and Advanced App- cations (ENUMATH) is a series of meetings held every two years to provide a forum for discussion on recent aspects of numerical mathematics and their applications. They seek to convene leading experts and young scientists with special emphasis on contributions from Europe. The ?rst ENUMATH me- ing held in Paris (1995), and the series continued by the ones in Heidelberg (1997), Jyv ¨ askyla ¨ (1999), Ischia (2001) and Prague (2003). This book collects the major part of the lectures given at ENUMATH 2005, that took place in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from July 18 to 22, 2005. It contents texts of invited speakers, and a selection of papers presented in minisymposia and works communicated within the sessions. The importance of numerical methods has increased dramatically in s- ence and engineering, re?ecting today’s unprecedented use of computers. The increasing importance of modeling in addition to numerical simulation was again evident in ENUMATH 2005. Indeed, nodaways mathematics is g- erally accepted as a technology, playing a crucial role in many branches of industrial activity. Recent results and new trends in the analysis of numerical algorithms as well as their application to challenging scienti?c and industrial problems were discussed during the meeting. Apart from the theoretical - pects, a major part of the conference was devoted to numerical methods for interdisciplinary applications, with emphasis on showing the potential of new computational methods for solving practical multidisciplinary problems.

The general goal of this book is to deduce rigorously, from the first principles, the partial differential equations governing the thermodynamic processes undergone by continuum media under forces and heat. Solids and fluids are considered in a unified framework. Reacting mixtures of fluids are also included for which general notions of thermodynamics are recalled, such as the Gibbs equilibrium theory. Linear approximate models are mathematically obtained by calculating the derivatives of the constitutive response functions. They include the classical models for linear vibrations of thermoelastic solids and also for wave propagation in fluids (dissipative and non-dissipative acoustics and internal gravity waves).
