As soon as we (AS and PS) completed writing the book on H Optimal Con- 2 trol, another task of equal magnitude was laid to our charge. This task was to work on ?ltering and related topics. This book releases us from this charge. In this endeavor, we are fortunate to have found a capable person in our friend and colleague (AAS) who helped us release our burden. The subject of ?ltering is indeed vast and immense, much more so than the subject of H Optimal Control. In this work, we have tried to present what we 2 believe to be the fundamental issues of ?ltering. The book is not intended to give a chronological development of ?ltering from a historical point of view. A vast number of books already do so. Our intent here is to develop from our perspective the complete theory of ?ltering and various design methodologies associated with it along with their practical implementations. In this respect, we present here a state-of-the-art view of exact and almost input-decoupled ?ltering, H ,and H 2 1 ?ltering and inverse ?ltering issues, and include an application of ?ltering and inverse ?ltering to fault detection, isolation, and estimation. Most of the work reported here arose out of the research conducted by one or more of us and so- times in collaboration with our students and colleagues. Supposedly, young F.

Most nonlinear systems can be modeled as linear systems with constrains on their inputs and selected outputs. Unifying two decades of research, this book is the first to establish a comprehensive foundation for a systematic analysis and design of such systems The authors address the following issues in the work:* Internal or Lyapunov stability, external L_p stability, and simulatneous internal and external stability* Control system feedback design laws for different types of stability* New notions of external stability* Additional constraints on controller architecture under decentralized internal and external stabilization* Satisfactory performance, which also guarantees stabilityInternal and External Stabilization of Linear Systems with Constraints is an excellent reference for practicing engineers, graduate students, and researchers in control systems theory and design. The book may also serve as an advanced graduate text for a course or a seminar in nonlinear control systems theory and design in applied mathematics or engineering departments. Minimal prerequisites include a first graduate course in state-space methods as well as a first course in control systems design.

Ever since the beginnings of mankind eons ago, the desire to control, regulate, and track even under persistent disturbances has been a dominating influence in the development of human civilization. It is so also in the development of Automatic Control Theory and its Applications. The subject of output regula tion occupies a central theme in all endeavors of theoreticians and practition ers alike. Yet there is no book or monograph that brings all essential modem developments on output regulation under a single cover. This book is intended to fill this void. Main topics that are brought together in this book include among oth ers, classical exact output regulation of linear systems along with its differ ent facets of well-posedness, internal model principle, and structural stability; output regulation of linear systems with input amplitude and rate saturation constraints; output regulation with transient performance specifications; per formance issues (such as H2, H , L1 and others) with an output regulation oo constraint; generalized output regulation in which the set of tracking signals as well as the set of disturbances that act on the plant are broadened beyond those that are common in classical output regulation, and thus permitting us to deal with exact as well as almost output regulation under a variety of controllers, etc.

Loop Transfer Recovery (LTR) is part of the Communications and Control Engineering Series (CCES) edited by Professors B.W. Dickinson, E.D. Sontag, M. Thoma, A. Fettweis, J.L. Massey and J.W. Modestino. Loop Transfer Recovery deals with several issues of analysis and design of the Loop Transfer Recovery (LTR) problem. It discusses when and how an LTR is possible and outlines different controller structures and the available design freedom. An explanation of the actual design methods for accomplishing an LTR is given. Besides dealing with observer based measurement feedback controllers, which are commonly used for LTR, a new controller with a different architecture which out performs observer based controllers is presented. This publication will be of benefit to anyone who has completed a first graduate course in linear systems and state-space methods, together with an elementary knowledge of Linear Quadratic Control.

This monograph explores the synchronization of large-scale, multi-agent dynamical systems in the presence of disturbances, delays, and time-varying networks. Drawing upon their extensive work in this area, the authors provide a thorough treatment of agents with higher-order dynamics, different classes of models for agents, and the underlying networks representing the agents’ actions. The high technical level of their presentation and their rigorous mathematical approach make this a timely and valuable resource that will fill a gap in the existing literature. Divided into two sections, the first part of the book focuses on state synchronization of homogeneous multi-agent systems. The authors consider state synchronization by determining control strategies for both continuous- and discrete-time systems that achieve state synchronization under both full- and partial-state coupling. The chapters that follow examine multi-agent systems with both linear and nonlinear time-varying agents, input-delays for continuous- and discrete-time systems, and communication delays for continuous-time systems. The second part of the book is dedicated to regulated output synchronization of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with linear and nonlinear agents. Both sections of the book include performance considerations in H2- and H-infinity norms in the presence of external disturbances.Research on synchronization of multi-agent systems has been growing in popularity and is highly interdisciplinary, with applications to automobile systems, aerospace systems, multiple-satellite GPS and high-resolution satellite imagery, aircraft formations, highway traffic platooning, industrial process control with multiple processes, and more. Synchronization of Multi-Agent Systems in the Presence of Disturbances and Delays will therefore be of interest to upper-level graduate students, researchers, and engineers in industry working on interconnected dynamical systems.

This monograph represents the outcome of research effort of the authors on scalable synchronization of large-scale multi-agent systems (MAS). Cooperative control of multi-agent systems has been growing in popularity and is highly interdisciplinary in recent years. The application of synchronization of MAS includes automobile systems, aerospace systems, multiple-satellite GPS, high-resolution satellite imagery, aircraft formations, highway traffic platooning, industrial process control with multiple processes, and more. Most of the proposed protocols in the literature for synchronization of MAS require some knowledge of the communication network such as bounds on the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix and the number of agents. These protocols suffer from scale fragility wherein stability properties are lost for large-scale networks or when the communication graph changes. In the past few years, the authors of this monograph have worked on developing scale-free protocol design for various cases of MAS problems. The key contribution of the monograph is to offer a scale-free design framework and provide scale-free protocols to achieve synchronization, delayed synchronization, and almost synchronization in the presence of input and communication delays, input saturation and external disturbances. The scale-free design framework solely is based on the knowledge of agent models and does not depend on information about the communication network such as the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix or size of the network. Drawing upon their extensive work in this area, the authors provide a thorough treatment of agents with higher-order dynamics, different classes of models for agents, and the underlying networks representing actions of the agents. The high technical level of their presentation and their rigorous mathematical approach make this monograph a timely and valuable resource that will fill a gap in theexisting literature.
