Caravan have a history that stretches back over half a century, with a catalogue of music that ranges from progressive rock classics to pop gems that should have been hits. Lumped into that strange category known as ‘the Canterbury Sound’, they are both the paradigm and the transcendent band within that nebulous category. This book traces their history, track-by-track, over eighteen canonical albums, stopping off to examine the plethora of live and BBC session releases that have swollen their back catalogue like a girl who grows plump in the night. Beginning with their pop-psych debut on Verve, continuing through the run of classic and revered albums on Decca/Deram that forged their reputation, and then on the albums that saw them move towards pop and be swept up by the tides of fashion, it ends with the decades of reunions that saw fewer albums, but a refinement of the sensibilities that define their unique sound. With ever-present Pye Hastings on guitar/vocals/songwriting, and Richard Coughlan at his back on drums, the band has also been defined by the skills of viola player Geoff Richardson and the Sinclair cousins – David on keys and Richard on bass. But this is not to belittle the contribution of every musician and songwriter whose talents have combined to make this most English of bands just that little bit special…

Canine Crimebusters delves into the history and heroism of UK police dogs, exploring their evolution, highlighting amazing canines, and celebrating their bond with handlers. This book follows the heroic and touching tales of dogs on the frontline of crime prevention. The first truly recognised police dog section in the UK was out of the Met, based at Imber Court, Esher, and the star dog was PD Rex, handled by PC Arthur Holman. Rex was responsible for 120 arrests, the first drug sniffer dog in the UK, the first to work for the Flying Squad, and won numerous awards before his death from cancer at just seven. He also had a book by Holman about him, and a film made of his career (Police Dog, 1955). His success led to the establishment of the dog section at Keston which is still in operation. He is the star and the root of the story, but from there readers will be taken through the awe-inspiring tales of a series of individual dogs, and their police handlers, right up to today. The book also reveals how they are trained and have been used over the decades, and also highlight the heroic dogs that have foiled terrorists, found killers, and won valour awards in Rex’s pawprints. Through thrilling and heartwarming stories, readers will see how these dogs have thwarted terrorists, caught killers, and protected the public, with an appendix guiding readers to the K9 memorial site and relevant organisations for further engagement.

Metal Mythology is a deliciously-dark deep dive into the Heavy Metal music genre and the history of the folklore which inspired its music. The book begins with the story of Heavy Metal’s early years in the 1970s, explaining how it became popular with bands from working class British backgrounds like Birmingham’s Black Sabbath (with late Ozzy Osbourne) and East End lads Iron Maiden. Today’s fanbase - so-called “Metalheads” - will account for 13% of all arena and stadium audiences this year.It then delves into the rich - and often very British - folk legends which inspired some of heavy metal’s biggest tunes, and reveals the likely story behind them. It’s a dizzying mix from the werewolves, shapeshifters, fairies and vampires of pagan ballads, to the witch hunters and torture devices documented in historical records and the twisted characters by horror writers like Edgar Allan Poe, HP Lovecraft and Mary Shelley.Former Kerrang writer and prolific novelist Andy Boot looks at how this folklore was passed down and mutated as Britain changed from pagan to Christian and went from the dark ages through Enlightenment and past the Industrial Revolution. It’s a mix of social history, fantasy, folklore, gothic horror, and Heavy Metal music which will appeal to several unique (and very engaged) audiences, each in a different way. While there’s been no end of books of heavy metal, mythology or British history, there’s yet to be one of all three. And that is the magic behind this title.
