Self-help organizations and charities were the most numerous, but least-studied of pressure groups to emerge during perestroika . This book examines the social exclusion experienced before 1985 by non-working citizens, studies the pre-1985 disabled people's movement and its numerous unofficial, but non-dissident organizations, discusses why the Gorbachev leadership adopted the non-Soviet concept of 'charity', analyses the failure of local authorities after 1985 to stave off pluralism and defeat the voluntary organizations, and assesses how successfully the latter built the foundations of a civil society.

This book examines a number of key questions about social change in contemporary Russia - issues such as how people survive when they are not paid for months on end, 'the New Poor', the falling birth rate, why so many Russian men die in middle age, whether regional identities are becoming stronger, and how people's sense of 'Russianness' has developed since the creation of the Russian Federation in 1992. It examines these issues by looking at actual experiences in three small Russian towns. It includes a great deal of original ethnographic research, and, by looking at real places overall, provides a good sense of how different aspects of social change are interlinked, and how they actually affect real people's lives.

De-Stalinization and the House of Culture (1990) looks at the houses of culture – arts centres which in the Stalinist period functioned as agencies of political socialisation – and the changes in their character and functions since Stalin’s death. This book explores the diminishing control of the Communist Party over public leisure from 1953 to the present day, as one aspect of the de-Stalinization and the dismantling of the totalitarian system. It focuses on the changing nature and functions of the ‘cultural enlightenment’ conducted in houses of culture and similar institutions. Public rejection of the Stalinist attempt to saturate all leisure activities with propaganda and to liquidate many national cultural traditions have gradually forced the party to relinquish much of its leading role in this area. The book compares this process in three different Soviet-type systems, the USSR, Poland and Hungary. It discusses depoliticization of house of culture activities and, especially in the era of perestroika, their eventual repoliticization by unofficial associations concerned with a mix of political, cultural, social and environmental issues. Today the house of culture, a quintessentially Stalinist institution, paradoxically provides a home for an emergent civil society.
