Customarily, much of traditional mathematics curricula was predicated on ''by hand'' calculation. However, ubiquitous computing requires us to refresh what we teach and how it is taught. This is especially true in the rapidly broadening fields of Data Mining and Artificial Intelligence, and also in fields such as Bioinformatics, which all require the use of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). Indeed, SVD is sometimes called the jewel in the crown of linear algebra. Linear Algebra for 21st Century Applications adapts linear algebra to best suit modern teaching and application, and it places the SVD as central to the text early on to empower science and engineering students to learn and use potent practical and theoretical techniques. No rigour is lost in this new route as the text demonstrates that most theory is better proved with an SVD. In addition to this, there is earlier introduction, development, and emphasis on orthogonality that is vital in so many applied disciplines throughout science, engineering, computing and increasingly within the social sciences. To assimilate the so-called third arm of science, namely computing, Matlab/Octave computation is explicitly integrated into developing the mathematical concepts and applications. A strong graphical emphasis takes advantage of the power of visualisation in the human brain and examples are included to exhibit modern applications of linear algebra, such as GPS, text mining, and image processing. Active learning is encouraged with exercises throughout that are aimed to enhance ectures, quizzes, or ''flipped'' teaching.

The specialty of plastic surgery was developed and named by Sir Harold Gillies following his work between the two world wars reconstructing severely damaged servicemen from the First World War. Sir Harold went on to inspire and train other surgeons from around the world. Among them was his cousin Sir Archibald McIndoe, who in the Second World War set up the unit at East Grinstead Hospital which looked after severely burned airmen and some other servicemen. The airmen themselves set up the famous Guinea Pig Club which gave enormous social and often financial support to the severely injured. After the Second World War specialized burn units were created throughout the UK, including one at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where Anthony Roberts served. After the number of war injuries had reduced, the burn unit for all three services was set up at RAF Halton, a few miles from Stoke Mandeville. A close relationship between the hospitals developed which led to military surgeons being posted to Stoke Mandeville for training in the care of burns and an introduction to plastic surgery. Most doctors will never be involved in a disaster during their working lives. Anthony Roberts was involved in treating casualties from the Bradford City football stadium fire in 1985 that claimed 56 lives and resulted in hundreds more being injured, many of them with severe burns. It had a major effect on him, and on all those involved. It started his appearances on the media and his overseas visits to other countries to talk about it. And subsequently he was asked to join and to lead other international efforts to provide help. He led the first British team from Stoke Mandeville that gave aid in Sarajevo during the war. He returned several times and has also given aid in three other war zones and six major disasters. Because of this involvement in all these situations Professor Roberts taught junior trainee surgeons from the three British services and those of several foreign countries. As well as his military involvement, Anthony Roberts spent sixteen years working with the Royal Protection Group at State occasions, and thirty years working as a motor racing track doctor including at Formula One level, providing immediate and vital treatment to drivers who suffered serious injuries and burns following accidents on the track and to spectators. There have been enormous changes in the specialty over the past fifty years and a detailed view of these is given in an absorbing account of this life-enhancing surgery by one who served on the frontline in difficult and dangerous situations around the world.

In the third volume of memoirs by Professor Anthony Roberts OBE, Scholarship Boy – Life Away from Work, we see him through his personal life at school, as a bachelor, and as a married man with two children and four grandchildren.Growing up with very little money, Anthony had to work whenever it was possible and the money he earned, together with various scholarships, enabled him to become a cub, a scout and to start travelling. A military cadet at school, he would have joined the Royal Air Force to fly had his eyesight not made this possible. He was a choirboy and played both the flute and the violin and as he got older, he became interested in cars and motorbikes and houses.Anthony’s studies and full-time career, which is described in the first two volumes, took over and this left little time for sports, hobbies or free time. This continued after his retirement where he taught part time around the world until 2022.Scholarship Boy – Life Away from Work by Professor Anthony Roberts OBE showcases his extraordinary life and the contributions he’s made outside his work.

Anthony Roberts started travelling soon after he was born. He had his first six birthdays in different counties in England and Scotland as his father was in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. And then came a very difficult period when after TB and his parents’ divorce he returned to Essex with almost no family income. Living on the edge of Epping Forest from the age of eight an interest in the birds, bees and trees became apparent – and continued throughout his life. Foreign travel started with annual visits to Europe with his local Scouts and then with a scholarship to Paris to study French. And then with other scholarships real travel started with a visit to Arctic Lapland with the British Schools Exploring Society when he finished school. This was the first of more than twenty expeditions to thirteen countries, mainly as the doctor and scientist, during his long life. Travel also developed with sport, with study, with work and finally with the joy of travelling and seeing the geography and the people in countries around the world – often decades apart. And always noticing and recording the natural history seen. He has spent more than eight years of his life overseas in 119 countries on seven continents and has spent more than a year under canvas as well as some interesting situations in Sarajevo during their War and also in Azerbaijan, Haiti and Kosovo. And then came Covid and that was the reason that his memoirs were written. He has had a fascinating life which still continues.
