'Grand' corruption, generally used to define corruption amongst the top political elite, has drawn increasing attention from academics and policy makers during recent years. Our understanding of the causes and mechanisms of this type of corruption, however, falls short of its importance and consequences. This volume provides theoretical analysis of economic and political conditions that allow 'grand' corruption to survive as well as case studies and empirical analysis that supports the theoretical models used.

Corruption has been part of our economic and political life since ancient times. During the past few years, there has been a resurgence of interest in understanding the impact that corruption has on our societies. The objective of this volume is to stimulate further studies on corruption by providing a review of existing work in this field and raising some questions that warrant further research. Contributors to the text synthesize studies dealing with various aspects of corruption and present some new questions regarding the origin and impact of corruption. Accordingly, the volume has two aims. First, it attempts to bring together essential elements of different approaches that have been used to understand corruption. Second, many of the contributors propose a shift in the focus of studies on corruption away from bribery-type activities to corruption that results in distortion of economic policies. The text seeks to define and model corruption. The contributions in this volume examine the political economy of corruption - that is, why it continues to exist - as well as its consequences, and what measures, if any, can be brought to bear on this phenomenon.

This book examines the development and persistence of political corruption. Arvind Jain explores how corrupt regimes deploy a range of tools to control and weaken the mechanisms that monitor their actions, allowing them to expropriate a society’s wealth while the international economy helps them safeguard their assets.Jain examines the many forms that corrupt regimes can assume, including individual political corruption, crony capitalism and corrupt authoritarian regimes. He conducts a detailed analysis of how these regimes limit the powers of the media, distort the constitution and manipulate the electoral process to consolidate their control. The book also delves into the critical role of the international economy in facilitating political corruption by allowing the investment of illegitimately acquired wealth in global financial markets. Jain rethinks traditional paradigms by advocating for a greater focus on the role of monitoring institutions in order to combat political corruption.Students and scholars of political science, law and politics, economic crime and corruption will greatly benefit from this illuminating book. It is also a useful resource for anticorruption activists and reformers.
