Artists and Intellectuals in Exile in 1970s West Berlin explores how displacement and exile became catalysts for artistic and intellectual innovation during a pivotal period in European cultural history.Drawing on extensive archival research, fieldwork, and interviews, the book examines how exiled and migrant artists- including Günter Brus, Romy Haag, Anne Jud, Marwan Kassab-Bachi, and Akbar Behkalam- transformed the divided city of West Berlin into a crucible of creative resistance. Blending art history, urban studies, feminist and queer theory, and migration scholarship, the book develops a new understanding of exile as a creative condition- a mode of living and making that redefined belonging, identity, and the politics of space. Through close readings of performance, painting, film, and collective practices, it reveals how marginality and dislocation generated new aesthetic forms and transnational solidarities.Artists and Intellectuals in Exile in 1970s West Berlin will be of interest to postgraduate and undergraduate students in art, cultural, and migration studies, as well as general readers interested in Berlin’s cultural history.

Migration presents critical essays, lexicons and conversations about an online Editorial published by Arts Cabinet at the start of the pandemic, which brought together leading artists, researchers, practitioners, theorists from around the world to present their research, experimentations and work in connection with the topic of Migration. A rich document of 60 contributions presenting an original perspective on the question of Migration is the object of reflection of this publication. The publication was conceived as an extension of the Editorial and has been designed to embody fluidity and continuity, rather than mark a conclusion. An Iranian immigrant struggling to integrate into 1970s German society, the filmmaker Sohrab Shahid Saless (1944–98) has become a neglected figure in discussions of diaspora cinema. In this – the first English-language book to reflect on his work and its implications for creativity in the diasporic conditions of urban displacement – a range of international scholars provide a comprehensive account of Shahid Saless’s films and production methods. Outlining his affinity with celebrated directors like Chantal Akerman and Abbas Kiarostami, as well as visual artists like Romuald Karmakar, the contributors firmly position Shahid Saless as a filmmaker who speaks forcefully to the traumas of displacement and migration.

This volume explores the lives of women in Iran through the social, political and aesthetic contexts of veiling, unveiling and re-veiling. Through poetic writings and photographs, Azadeh Fatehrad responds to the legacy of the Iranian Revolution via the representation of women in photography, literature and film. The images and texts are documentary, analytical and personal. The Poetics and Politics of the Veil in Iran features Fatehrad’s own photographs in addition to work by artists Hengameh Golestan, Shirin Neshat, Shadi Ghadirian, Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Adolf Loos, Gaëtan Gatian de Clérambault and Alison Watt. In exploring women’s lives in post-revolutionary Iran, Fatehrad considers the role of the found image and the relationship between the archive and the present, resulting in an illuminating history of feminism in Iran in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
