Today, the Kunsthaus Graz is integral to the urban identity of Austria’s second-largest city. The “friendly alien” designed by architects Peter Cook and Colin Fournier has become a familiar object in the city since landing in 2003. But views on the building have changed with the times. Looking back at nearly twenty years of history since the building's creation, the book opens up a kaleidoscopic perspective with a primary focus on how the Kunsthaus is used. It contextualizes the Kunsthaus Graz both locally and globally while exploring its relation to those who use it. With written contributions by Barbara Steiner, Sophia Walk, Pablo von Frankenberg, Anselm Wagner, Katia Huemer, Niels Jonkhans, Elisabeth Schlögl, Peter Cook, and Colin Fournier, and photographic contributions by Arthur Zalewski and Martin Grabner

Architecture of Coexistence: Building PluralismThis book investigates how architecture can shape an open-minded and inclusive society, highlighting three internationally renowned projects: the White Mosque in Visoko, Bosnia-Herzegovina (1980); the Islamic Cemetery Altach in Altach, Austria (2012); and the Superkilen public park in Copenhagen, Denmark (2012). Scholarly essays across various disciplines, along with interviews with the architects and users of these projects, provide intriguing insights into architecture’s ability to bridge cultural differences. Soliciting a wide array of questions about migration, transculturalism, visibility, inclusion, and exclusion, the book sheds light on the long-term social processes generated between architectural form and its users.Architecture of Coexistence offers a truly interdisciplinary perspective on a very timely subject: “Building pluralism” means designing for a respectful inclusion of different cultural needs, practices, and traditions. With contributions by Azra Akšamija, Mohammad al-Asad, Ali S. Asani, Simon Burtscher-Matis, Amila Buturović, Farrokh Derakhshani, Robert Fabach, Eva Grabherr, Amra Hadžimuhamedović, Tina Gudrun Jensen, Jennifer Mack, Nasser Rabbat, Barbara Steiner, Helen Walasek and Wolfgang Welsch.Photo essays by Velibor Božović, Cemal Emden, Jesper Lambaek, and Nikolaus Walter.

The book Superkilen celebrates the dawn of a new type of urban public space. Designed by BIG, TOPOTEK1 and SUPERFLEX, Superkilen is a kilometre - long urban park wedged within one of the most ethnically diverse diverse and socially challenging neighbourhoods in Denmark. The project triggers the imagination, exploring the idea of a plural "we" and advocating for community as a collective experience of otherness. Superkilen is composed of globally-sourced objects from 60 different countries - the 60 nationalities of the people inhabiting the area surrounding it - ranging from exercise gear from muscle beach Los Angeles to sewage drains from Israel, palm trees from China and neon signs from Quatar and Russia. This book invites readers behind the scenes of the making of Superkilen, through the reflections of its creators, and discusses the project's relationship with changes in the conception of public space and to the increasing expectations of public investments.
