Unter dem wachsenden Einfluss, den östliche und westliche Theologen aufeinander nahmen, haben einige moderne Übersetzer der Bibel die Soteriologie des Paulus als Theosis oder Vergöttlichung beschrieben. Im Zusammenhang damit erforscht Ben C. Blackwell die anthropologische Reichweite der Soteriologie des Paulus, um festzustellen, wie hilfreich diese Charakterisierung ist. Anhand der Wirkungsgeschichte der Paulusbriefe untersucht er erst die Texte zweier griechischer Rezipienten des Paulus - Irenaeus und Cyril von Alexandria - um zu verdeutlichen, wozu Vergöttlichung führt und um zu ermitteln, welche paulinischen Texte sie verwendeten, um ihre soteriologischen Auslegungen zu stützen. Die Analyse konzentriert sich dann auf die paulinische Soteriologie, die in Römer 8 und 2. Korinther 3-5 (mit Exkursen zu anderen Abschnitten) zum Ausdruck kommt und erforscht, wie Gläubige Christus' Sterben und Leben, sein Leiden und seine Herrlichkeit, im Geist verkörpern. Blackwell schließt mit einem Vergleich zwischen der Vergöttlichung, wie sie von diesen beiden griechischen Theologen dargestellt wurde und der paulinischen Soteriologie, wobei er die umfangreichen Überschneidungen ebenso erwähnt wie die wesentlichen Unterschiede.
