Radical democracy informs contemporary social movements both as critique of existing liberal democratic social orders and as inspiration for collective action to challenge power structures. However, existing approaches on the relationship between radical democracy and social movements often truncate complex socio-political issues, constraining political imagination and stifling 'truly radical' alternatives. This Element offers an analysis of contemporary social movements in Colombia and Turkey to show the limits and potential of radical democracy to reimagine new expressions of citizenship and non-capitalist alternatives. It argues that there is a mismatch between the radical democratic paradigm as it is formulated within Eurocentric purview, and the ways it has been articulated and practised by anti-austerity and pro-democracy movements of the twenty-first century. We propose that radical democracy should be rethought in light of novel forms of political activism and visions emerging from these social movements as a response to the failures of liberal democracy.

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into everyday life has extended beyond functional assistance into the intimate domains of emotion, companionship, and love. AI chatbots and virtual companions are increasingly engaged as emotional confidants, romantic partners, and sources of care, prompting a re-evaluation of how intimacy is constituted and experienced in a technologically mediated society. This Element examines the emergence of what is termed post-humanistic love, defined as a profound emotional and romantic attachment formed between humans and artificial agents. Drawing on sociological and philosophical theories of intimacy, love, and post-humanism, the Element explores how AI interfaces reconfigure classical conceptions of love, as well as contemporary understandings of emotional reflexivity, distant intimacy and emotional labour. Empirically, the study analyses first-person accounts describing romantic and emotionally significant relationships with AI companions. The findings highlight both the affective potency and the ethical fragility of AI-mediated intimacy in the post-human condition.

Moving beyond simplistic and sensationalist portrayals of kidnapping, this book offers a critical and interdisciplinary analysis that examines kidnapping as a social, historical, cultural, and political phenomenon.Kidnapping is a profound violation of human rights that reshapes societies, disrupts governance, and inflicts lasting trauma on individuals and communities. In Colombia, kidnapping became an endemic feature of the armed conflict, leaving tens of thousands of families in a perpetual state of uncertainty and fear. Through an innovative blend of criminology, sociology, transitional justice, surveillance studies, and collective memory epistemologies, this book unpacks kidnapping as a crime of (im)mobility, a strategy of war, and a serious human rights violation. Drawing on fifteen years of research, including statistical analysis, archival work, and interviews with former hostages, ex-combatants, and policymakers, it reveals how kidnapping shaped Colombia’s conflict and its ongoing efforts toward justice, truth, and reconciliation. By exploring its patterns, motivations, and legacies, this book not only sheds light on Colombia’s experience but also contributes to global discussions on transitional justice, collective memory, and the strategies societies adopt to confront mass victimisation. The Social Construction of Kidnapping is essential reading for scholars and students of criminology, transitional justice, human rights, political violence, and Latin American studies, as well as policymakers, human rights advocates, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how societies confront legacies of mass victimisation and forge paths toward accountability and healing.
