The five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) frequently attract attention as examples of a ‘Nordic model’. The meanings of the term vary, but especially since the global financial crisis of 2008-9 the Nordic countries have often been portrayed positively, as examples of economic dynamism, innovation and social equality. Studies of these images of the Nordic countries and their international circulations have opened new horizons for understanding the global influences upon the Nordic model. This volume explores how the Nordic model has been shaped by global entanglements, in exchange not only with Western Europe and North America, but also with the Global South. Drawing on selected case studies, the volume offers new perspectives on the meanings of the Nordic model and Nordic exceptionalism in a global context during the half century since c. 1970.

The Image of Sweden in the USA: History, events and mechanisms
Häftad, Engelska, 2024

This report examines the historical image of Sweden in the United States against the backdrop of recent debates on how Sweden is portrayed abroad. The Swedish–American relationship is important for Sweden – culturally, economically, and politically. This is highly relevant given current security concerns and Sweden’s recent NATO application. The USA is also a key arena for the global dissemination of perceptions about Sweden, which is critical in today’s increasingly polarized media landscape. The report does not aim to present a comprehensive overview of the entirety of American image of Sweden but focuses on events and occasions where attention to Sweden and Swedish affairs has both quantitatively intensified and qualitatively changed.

The Nigerian Civil War, spanning from 1967 to 1970, garnered significant global attention, especially due to the media's portrayal of suffering children in the seceding region of Biafra and the subsequent humanitarian response. This booklet chronicles a seminar where journalists from Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, who reported from Biafra, shared their experiences and perspectives on the conflict and the humanitarian efforts aimed at alleviating the famine. The discussions captured in this document provide valuable insights into Nordic humanitarianism and its ethical dimensions, with relevance for contemporary global aid initiatives and the involvement of Nordic countries in international humanitarian cooperation. Norbert Götz is Professor at the Institute of Contemporary History at Södertörn University and head of the project “Civil Society without Boundaries: Nordic Humanitarianism Facing the Biafra Crisis”. Carl Marklund is an Associate Professor in Nordic Studies at the University of Helsinki and a researcher at the Institute for Contemporary History at Södertörn University.
