}This eloquent book takes us on a spell-binding journey into the workings of our bodies in health and disease. Dr. Charles A. Pasternak captivates us with his vivid and even poetic explanations of what keeps us healthy and vital, and what tears away at our health. He possesses the gift for rendering complex topics clear and lyrical, as in the ways our molecules interact with one another to decide the fate of our heart, brain, and lungs---whether we live or die.Why does disease rear its ugly head? Why does cancer take hold in some of us and pass by others? What roles do nutrition and stress play in determining our chances for a long, fulfilling life? Can we hold our eventual demise at bay by trying novel drugs and therapies? Dr. Pasternak also explores to what extent the illnesses we sufferand even our level of intelligenceare dependent on the genes we inherit from our parents, or the food we eat, or even the environment we inhabit. The story of our bodies is a true saga that has never before been so engrossingly told. }

This unique volume provides an integrated overview of the subject of monovalent cations, specifically aimed at students and researchers. It is divided into two parts: the first deals with the processes by which monovalent cations are transported across biological membranes; the second deals with the processes that are affected by changes in intracellular cations. Each chapter describes in simple biochemical terms the interaction between one or more monovalent cations and a particular biological system of importance to current understanding of body function in health and disease. This useful publication is invaluable to students and researchers in biochemistry, physiology, neurology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, cardio-pulmonology, hematology, laboratory medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, internal medicine, psychiatry, urology, biomedical physics and medical nutrition.

Deluded New World explores the cultural and ideological battlegrounds shaping contemporary discourse. Controversy dogs many aspects of our lives today, from denying women the security they expect in designated spaces to no longer considering God to be male. The first has serious implications; the second is of no consequence to most. Between these two extremes lie some of the polarising issues addressed in this book: bigotry and racism, political correctness, gender and sexuality, slavery and colonisation, and free speech. Each chapter draws on concrete, real-world examples to illuminate the complex intersections between history, culture, and modern identity politics. While the subjects discussed are not new, their framing as "controversial" often reflects the moral, political, and intellectual sensibilities of the present age. Slavery, for example, can be traced back at least 10,000 years, though few considered it to be controversial until the Age of Enlightenment dawned in the seventeenth century; free speech has been constrained since the time of Socrates. This book argues that some topics, like bigotry and aspects of sexual difference, are partially innate, whereas others are culturally contingent and reflect the ideological climate of the twenty-first century. Deluded New World argues against the wholesale acceptance of dominant narratives and reflects on the direction of modern Western societies. Borrowing its title in part from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, this book is not fiction, but a warning. Pasternak finds evidence that at least one instance of deluded ideology is already in decline. But most continue unabated. These he considers to be a threat to the liberties inherent in the Free World.

As the new millennium approaches, it is appropriate to ask how far medicine and the life sciences have brought us, and to wonder how specific fields will develop over the next decade or so.This volume gathers together a number of leading scientists to give a bird's eye view of their field. Much of the emphasis is on cancer, microbial infections and immunology, because these are some of the most rapidly advancing areas of research. However, the book is wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, and covers topics as diverse as reproductive health technology, animal-to-human transplants, drug resistance, non-invasive diagnosis by magnetic resonance, novel membrane technology, and carbon nanotubes. The graduate student faced with a decision regarding his or her future topic of research could do worse than browse through this collection of articles by experts in the field.

Since time immemorial, men have assumed superior innate qualities which have justified them in exerting power over the other sex right up to the twentieth century. The last few years have seen the emergence of a new literary genre: to show that despite this, women have managed to become outstanding writers, artists, scientists, explorers, rulers and politicians. Of such books, none discusses a fundamental question: is the supposed male superiority biological, or has it arisen for some other reason over the course of time? This is the issue that Androcentrism: The Ascendancy of Man addresses.The stronger physique of males may have given Palaeolithic man a feeling of superiority, but the two sexes probably lived in fairly gender-neutral, or even matriarchal, groups right up to the end of the Neolithic Age. Charles Pasternak argues that it was the emergence of hierarchies, like chiefdom, that largely sparked androcentrism. It became established as villages grew into towns, with the ownership of property as an important ingredient, during the Bronze Age. While the Mediaeval Period was a time of slight respite for women, the Age of Enlightenment in Europe did not bolster this trend; it reversed it. Not until the latter half of the nineteenth century was androcentrism beginning to be seriously questioned, but significant change happened only after World War I. Today androcentrism has virtually disappeared from most parts of the world. It was just a cultural blip, albeit one that lasted over 5,000 years.Related Link(s)

Written by an international group of experts and endorsed by leading scientists, this multi-author book answers two of today's most pressing questions: the origin of the virus and the consequences of lockdown. Aimed at the general reader as well as at researchers and medical doctors, its span includes previously suppressed data on the origin of the virus, the development of novel mRNA vaccines, the case for a Swedish type of mild lockdown, and analyses of social and political issues thrown up by the pandemic. Evaluating a Pandemic is an incisive account of how civilisation grappled with the greatest world crisis since WWII. Join Charles Pasternak and his authors as they sketch a future of health, equity, and hope.
