Are cartoons of Mohammed today's anti-Semitic postcards? Are the protests against the construction of mosques in German towns comparable with the cries of "Jews out!" during the German Empire? Following a heated public debate, comparisons between present hostility to Islam and traditional forms of anti-Semitism are also occupying political scientists, religious scholars and contemporary historians. Certainly in the future there will also be a need for a comparative analysis of the mechanisms of the stigmatisation and ostracism of minorities. This volume deals with the backgrounds to old-new hostile stereotypes of Jews and Muslims in Germany, and presents the views of media experts and members of both minorities.

The series European-Jewish Studies reflects the international network and competence of the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish studies (MMZ). Thanks to the highly interdisciplinary character of the series, which is edited in collaboration with the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg, particular emphasis is placed on the way in which history, the humanities and cultural sciences approach the subject, as well as on fundamental intellectual, political and religious questions that inspire Jewish life and thinking today, and have influenced it in the past.

Am 21. März 1933 inszenierten die Nationalsozialisten mit dem „Tag von Potsdam“ publikumswirksam den Schulterschluss der neuen Machthaber mit den alten, wilhelminischen Eliten aus Adel, Bürgertum, Kirche und Militär. 80 Jahre nach dem Umbruchsjahr 1933 werden im vorliegenden Band die historischen Kontexte des „Tages von Potsdam‍“ als einer entscheidenden Wegmarke bei der Errichtung der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur noch einmal näher betrachtet. In neun Beiträgen von renommierten Wissenschaftlern wird zunächst der Verlauf des „Tages von Potsdam“ rekonstruiert, seine Bedeutung in der Gedächtniskultur analysiert und die weiteren Etappen und Faktoren der nationalsozialistischen Machdurchsetzung in den Blick genommen. Zum 90. Jahrestag nun als Broschurausgabe.

Zum anderen soll auch gefragt werden, ob und auf welche Weise diese Erscheinungenmit trans- und internationalen politischen und gesamtgesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen zusammenhängen.
