Lincoln has played an important role in history since its time as a Roman settlement. Subsequently taken over by the Vikings and then the Danes, it became a major trading centre in the East of England and, following the Norman Conquest, the Normans recognised its importance and built their castle there and their cathedral. Today both still stand, although the cathedral was substantially rebuilt after an earthquake in the 12th century. Although Lincoln went into a decline after the Middle Ages, it was fought over by Parliamentary and Royalist forces in the Civil War and the coming of industrialisation saw its fortunes rise again. Many large engineering companies were based in Lincoln and although their presence today is smaller, the city continues to grow.In this book Daniel J. Codd explores the history of Lincoln through the story of its buildings, people and events through the ages. Readers will discover many little known episodes in this history of the town, both the Uphill area which is home to the Castle and Cathedral and the Downhill area by the River Witham. These include the Cathedral, which has drawn so many people to it since mediaeval times, with its fascinating history and changing use over the centuries, and also the Castle, which was recently home to one of only four copies of Magna Carta, Steep Hill which links the two parts of the city, Uphill and Downhill, why the city was settled in that location and the effects this has had, the canals which brought the Industrial Revolution to Lincoln, and its two present-day universities.Secret Lincoln explores the less well-known episodes and characters in the history of this cathedral city through the years, bringing to life tales of those who have lived in it and the places they inhabited.

It is no understatement to say that Lincoln’s story is told in its buildings. This is at its most obvious in the cathedral quarter, where the city’s Norman castle and medieval Bishop’s Palace jostle for space alongside historic hostelries. Looming over everything is the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. This part of Lincoln is approached by way of the famous Steep Hill, which is lined with houses that date back to the medieval era, like the Jews House and Norman House. However, beyond this area, the city features many other buildings from almost every era throughout history, with Roman remains, medieval religiouos ruins, Tudor, Stuart and Georgian houses, and many fascinating buildings from the Victorian age and the twentieth century up to the present day, including Lincoln’s infamous Victorian prison and the Theatre Royal that has entertained the people of Lincoln for over 200 years. Each has its own story, and many have a hidden history behind the façade.Lincoln in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating city through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Lincoln over the years. The book will appeal to all those who live in Lincoln or who have an interest in the city.

Lincolnshire has many well-known stories of the supernatural, among the best known of which is that of the Lincoln Imp. In this book author Daniel J. Codd explores the supernatural lore of Lincolnshire. It includes all manner of phenomena, from forgotten poltergeist incidents and village miracles to recent allegations of werewolf and yeti-type creatures seen in the wilds of Lincolnshire. There are many hitherto unpublished accounts such as reports of the ghost of a small man who appeared to builders renovating a house in Lincoln; a ghostly lady who approached a house in Skellingthorpe (whereupon previously unnoticed footprints were found in concrete outside the door); and a phantom Second World War soldier who crossed a road leading to his old house in Lincoln. There are also stories of UFOs, two tall humanoid figures seen crossing wasteland, monkeys and panthers running wild, and a smoky cross that allegedly appears outside Scunthorpe’s hospital when someone is about to die.Paranormal Lincolnshire takes the reader into the world of ghosts, spirits and poltergeists in the county, following their footsteps into the unknown. It captures the spectrum of ghosts, haunted places, UFOs, strange creatures and weird phenomena reported across the county, old and new. These tales will delight ghost hunters and fascinate and intrigue everybody who knows Lincolnshire.
