Preparation of a text intended largely for review of material to which students have been previously exposed through a formal course requires certain considerations and compromises. By nature, effective review books are shorter in length and less comprehensive in scope than texts utilized as course adjuncts. The reduction of a large body of information for review purposes should be one of selective condensation and not one of global, random deletion so that content remains significant and relevant. To be most useful, a review text should not be so general that it becomes ineffective and at the same time not so detailed that it represents an additional exhaustive treatise. Additionally, continuity and coherence must be maintained within the abbre viated format allowed. This work fulfills those criteria. Histology or microanatomy, as an individual subject, is an amalgamation of many different but related disciplines including cytology, microscopic morphology, developmental microstructure, molecular biology, cellular genetics and physiology. As such, it encompasses an immense information base, some of which is repeated and hopefully reinforced in other courses of study.

These notes were developed to assist in the review of the basic science of pathology for those students preparing to sit for various national proficiency examinations which include, as part of their content, material dealing with general and systemic pathology. As such, the notes are not intended to replace the many fine textbooks of pathology whose scope, detail, and mission are more suited to the in depth study of pathology. Rather, these notes are intended to serve as "memory joggers" to rekindle and refresh the mind of some of the salient features of various disease processes and to point out to the student possible areas of weakness which they may need to address in more detail by referring to one of the standard textbooks of pathology. In this regard, these notes are presented in an organized and sensible (we hope!) outline format which is intended to allow systematic review of the material in a reasonable amount of time. In an effort to contain cost and avoid undue repetition with other volumes of the Oklahoma Notes series, some topics that are generally covered in most standard pathology courses as well as illustrative material have been omitted from the present edition. The authors would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the faculty and staff of the Department of Pathology for their ideas, support, and assistance during the preparation of these notes. In particular, we would like to thank Drs. K.

This text was developed as an instrument to aid a variety of students in their endeavor to review the basic science of pathology. It is intended to be useful to students of medicine preparing to sit for various national proficiency examinations, which include, as part of their content, the basic science of pathology. In the context of its usage here, pathology refers to an amalgamation of the general and systemic disciplines of the subject. As such, it encompasses an immense amount of material attested to by the size and weight of most standard reference textbooks which are often published in two volumes just to enable the owner to transport both him(her)self and the book simultaneously. This is not meant by any means to detract from or dispute the usefulness of these encyclopedic works. But even more difficult than carrying these weighty objects of scientific art, is the retention and transport of their contents in the minds of readers. The review manual which follows these comments was designed to allow a rapid review of this formidable large body of information while in the process consuming only a reasonable amount of time and effort. It is not intended to be comprehensive in its scope nor to replace existing comprehensive works but rather to provide an organized format to direct a systematic review of major areas. To this end the material is presented in a sensible outline form laced with synoptic comments.
