This element is a study on Hegel's dialectic. One motivation for turning to dialectic is the idea that in order to understand the complex and dynamic structure of reality and of our thinking itself, we need a different way of thinking from that provided by standard logic and by traditional philosophy. The aim of the book is to present Hegel's basic idea of dialectic and to explain it through an interpretation of the text, an account of its reception, and a survey of themes in the secondary literature. In the scholarly debate, controversy surrounds the function and significance of Kant's Opus postumum for his philosophy. Dina Emundts demonstrates that the main function of the unpublished works is to develop a system of all the concepts required for empirical knowledge, and why this is indispensable for the foundation of an empirical physics. She presents a detailed analysis of the relationship of the conception of the Opus postumum to Kant's earlier writings. Beyond this, she examines further questions: why does Kant consider the foundation of the empirical sciences to be necessary, and why is this a task for a philosopher; how does Kant justify the possibility of scientific empirical knowledge; how does he proceed with the project of providing the necessary conceptual tools for an empirical physics?

Is self-consciousness a condition of possibility for knowledge? Does Kant’s theory of self-consciousness commit us to transcendental idealism? How convincing is Kant’s theory of self-consciousness? How should we understand transcendental idealism? What is Hegel’s alternative? How do Kant and Hegel conceive of the beautiful? How do their conceptions of beauty relate to their metaphysics? In this volume, some of the world’s most renowned Kant and Hegel scholars seek to provide answers.

Band 11 des Internationalen Jahrbuchs des Deutschen Idealismus widmet sich dem Thema Bewusstsein. Die Beiträge erörtern das Verständnis von Bewusstsein, Selbstbewusstsein und dem Verhältnis beider zueinander aus Sicht der Vertreter des Deutschen Idealismus und von deren Zeitgenossen. Während diese Themen schon lange mit dem Deutschen Idealismus verbunden sind, erfreuen sie sich in der Philosophie seit einigen Jahren insgesamt wieder eines großen Interesses. Der Band nimmt dies zum Anlass, um sich intensiv mit Fragen zur Möglichkeit, Bedeutung und Rolle von Bewusstsein und Selbstbewusstsein auseinanderzusetzen.

Volume 12 of the International Yearbook of German Idealism is dedicated to the theme of logic. The volume begins with essays on Kant. Kant acknowledges that there are various kinds of logic, and he considers it necessary to distinguish his transcendental logic from other kinds of logic. The contributions of E. Carson, T. Rosenkoetter, C. Tolley and G. Zöller discuss Kant on different kinds of logic, and they examine developments in the logic of his critical philosophy. Logic of course plays a central role in Hegel’s philosophy as well. Among the most important interpretative tasks is that of exploring the aim, structure and content of his logic. We include essays on Hegel’s logic by S. Houlgate, L. Illetterati, R. Pippin and P. Redding. The role of logic in the systems of Fichte and Schelling is less obvious. The contributions of C. Asmuth, A. Nuzzo and S. Schwenzfeuer are above all dedicated to determining the place of logic within the systems of the two philosophers. The essays of our authors A. Koch and P. Schwab take a more comparative look at the role of logic within German idealism as a whole.

Der 13. Band des Internationalen Jahrbuchs für deutschen Idenalismus widmet sich dem Thema ,Begehren‘. Von Alix Cohen und Paul Guyer wird in verschiedener Weise herausgearbeitet, dass Begehren bei Kant einen wichtigen Beitrag zur moralischen Handlung leistet. Federica Basaglia behandelt die Frage, welche Rolle das Begehrungsvermögen für Kants Thesen dazu spielt, was der moralische Status von Tieren ist. Andreas Schmidt und Allen Wood beschäftigen sich in ihren Beiträgen mit Begehren bei Fichte. Christoph Halbig widmet sich der Frage, auf welche Weise Hegel affektive Dimensionen des menschlichen Lebens in seine Philosophie integriert. Ulrich Pothast behandelt das Thema bei Schopenhauer und Judith Norman untersucht den Charakter des Begehrens oder Sehnens (desire) in der deutschen Romantik. Neben diesen Einzelstudien zu Kant, Fichte, Hegel und den Frühromantikern diskutieren Thomas Khurana, Ludwig Siep und Sebastian Gardner verschiedene Philosophen der klassischen deutschen Philosophie vergleichend.
