A general introduction to these conference proceedings and a comparison of the material culture of Phoenicia and Israel are followed by an analysis of the proper names in the Egyptian story of Wenamon, by a report on the recent excavations at Dor, and a study of the «Cypro-Phoenician» ware. There are essays on Mount Saphon and on Japhet's progeny, two studies on the tribe of Asher and the of Asher and the kingdom of Tyre, and a challenging analysis of the biblical traditions related to King Solomon's relations with Tyre. Further studies deal with the Phoenician deities worshipped in Israel and Judah, with the Greek translations of molek in the Septuagint, with the priestly dress as described in the Bible and the Phoenician dress as represented on the Umm el-'Amed steles, and with a bronze composition from Antarados.

The excavations of the last eighty years, especially at Ugarit, Ebla, and Emar, have accumulated an exceptional amount of source material referring to the Syro-Canaanite god Resheph, whose history can now be followed during three thousand years. Chapter I deals with Resheph in the Ebla texts, already witnessing his assimilation to the Mesopotamian god Nergal, while Chapter II is dedicated to his consort Adamma. Western Asiatic sources of the second millennium B.C., in particular those from Mari, Ugarit, Ras Ibn Hani, and Emar, are presented in Chapter III, while Chapter IV concerns the Syro-Canaanite iconography of Resheph. His cult in Egypt during the second millennium B.C. is examined in Chapter V, while Chapters VI and VII deal with the first millennium B.C. and the later references to Resheph in midrashic literature. Aramaic, Phoenician, Hebrew, Egyptian, and Greek sources are surveyed in detail with a particular attention to biblical texts. Several indices help using the extensive onomastic and cultic data collected in the book, always with references to the original or most recent publications of the pertinent epigraphic, literary, and iconographic material.

The present volume treats of some Aramaic inscriptions of the first millenium B.C. and deals with the personal names appearing in these documents. The author has chosen those inscriptions which, in his opinion, needed to be submitted afresh to a serious philological, historical, or exegetical analysis. They form three well delimited groups. The Old Aramaic inscriptions of Bar-Hadad and of Zakkur, as well as the Sefire treaties, are dealt with at first (Chapters I-III). Chapters IV-VI concern a decree law in Aramaic and Aramaic documents on clay tablets from Assur and Tell Halaf. A short study of an Aramaic inscription from southern Palestine (Chapter VII) precedes the chapters devoted to inscriptions from Asia Minor (Chapters VIII-X), which have a funerary or a commemorative character. Special attention is given to proper names occurring in the texts studied and in related documents, as names are an important source for our knowledge of ancient Aramaic and of the religious ideas of the Aramaeans.
