The presence of women in Roman military contexts has been established beyond doubt by scholars in recent decades. Nevertheless, very little sustained attention has been paid to who these women were, how they fit into the fabric of settlements, and what their contributions were to these communities. This volume offers new insights into the associations, activities, and social roles of women in the context of the Roman army, emphasizing the tangible evidence for the lived realities of women and families at different social levels. The various chapters adopt dynamic perspectives and shed new light on archaeological and historical evidence to provide novel conclusions about women's lives in antiquity. Histories of the Roman army can no longer ignore the women who lived and worked in its midst and histories of Roman women must acknowledge their important military role.

The excavations at Vindolanda have revealed some of the most precious and unique artefacts in Roman history. From leather boxing gloves and children’s shoes to wooden hair combs and the first evidence of female writing in Britain, this collection of artefacts typifies the amazing and diverse array of material culture present in Britain during the Roman period. The objects demonstrate the connections Britain had to the Continent and the Mediterranean world of the Roman Empire in a vibrant and sometimes personal way. These fifty objects illustrate the wealth of knowledge that can be gleaned from everyday items, and through them an understanding of the communities that lived at Vindolanda almost 2,000 years ago.

The assemblage of Roman footwear from Vindolanda is one of the most extraordinary and unique groups of archaeological objects from anywhere in the Roman Empire. Nearly 5,000 shoes have been preserved in the archaeological deposits at Vindolanda, a Roman military fort located on Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. They are more than just objects to marvel at from the ancient world and help us to understand so much more about the people who inhabited this frontier region: their ideas about adornment, their approaches to manufacturing, and how they used space in this Roman settlement. The shoes represent the individuals who occupied this fort from the late first to the fourth century ce.Elizabeth M. Greene introduces these unique and fascinating finds through some of the best examples of Roman shoes in the collection. This book will appeal to those who marvel at the shoes in the Vindolanda museum, as well as forming a valuable resource for researchers of Roman archaeology and the Roman army.
