This absorbing collection of photographs, containing many rare and unpublished images of Poole, illustrates the changes that have been seen in this picturesque seaside town as it has evolved over the years. Featuring scenes from work and home life to the town centre and the harbour, Poole Past & Present presents archive photographs alongside modern images taken from the same viewpoint. Accompanied by informative captions, this title will interest both long-time residents and new visitors to the town. Compiled by the authors of two previous books about the town, both long-term residents of Poole who have witnessed many of the changes for themselves, this volume will evoke feelings of nostalgia in all who know and love this area of Dorset.

In drawing upon the work of Jacques Derrida, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger and aligning it with a new trend in interdisciplinary phenomenology, Ian Andrews provides a unique look at the role of chance in art and its philosophical implications. His account of how the composer John Cage and other avant-garde creatives such as Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, Sol LeWitt and Ed Ruscha used chance in their work to question the structures of experience and prompt a new engagement with these phenomena makes a truly important contribution to Continental philosophy. Chance, Phenomenology and Aesthetics will appeal to scholars and advanced students in the disciplines of phenomenology, deconstruction and hermeneutics, as well as being compelling reading for anyone interested in pursuing sound studies, art theory and art history through an interdisciplinary post-phenomenological lens.

This book of over 200 old photographs features the town of Poole from the beginning of the century to more recent scenes. Most of the photographs come from private collections and many have not been published before. Many areas of Poole feature, including Broadstone, Parkstone and Canford Cliffs. We see images of the beach, the quay and Brownsea Castle. Poole's former industries are also included, such as the White house Laundry and Christopher Hill Ltd. Well-known traders are featured, including Bailey and Beament butchers in the high street, the Co-op self service store in Parkstone Road in the 1950s and Field's Garage in Ashley Road. The people of Poole feature just as prominently as the townscape and we see the community in moments of leisure enjoying many memorable events, such as the 'Beating of the Bounds' ceremony, operatic society productions and regattas. The people are also captured at work and during formative years at school. Some of Poole's best known individuals are recorded, including Louie Dingwall, who ran a bus company but also trained racehorses, Fred (Sandy) Wills, a well-known fisherman and Frederick Phelps Oakley, Sheriff of Poole in 1911.This book will evoke many feelings of nostalgia and will be enjoyed by all who know and love this Dorset town.
