This text is a full-scale survey of Welsh coastal fishermen, past and present. It looks at traditional Welsh fishing methods, some fast disappearing, others still in use today. The wealth of fish found around Welsh coasts is described and listed; equipment and techniques, including the varied netting practices, trapping, long lining and shellfish gathering, are explained in detail. Archive photographs and other material reveal the men and women whose livlihood depended on the catch. In contrast, the book also traces the development of the fishing industry in the larger ports of Milford Haven, Cardiff and Swansea, particularly in the boom years of the 19th-century.

This work argues that the heritage of Wales is being exploited and cheapened by the creation of tourist "experiences" which trade on nostalgia. It calls for integrity and authenticity in the interpretation of Welsh heritage, emphasizing the need for careful selection of sites and artefacts. The text is essentially a survey from which implications not only for the development of museums and interpretative centres in Wales but also for other parts of the United Kingdom. It should be of interest to all those who work in the "heritage industry", to their public and to anyone concernbed about the way in which the past is being presented.

For many centuries the woollen industry was among the most important of British industries. It was certainly the most widespread, because it was impossible to move any distance at all without seeing some evidence of the existence of this important industry. The textile manufacturer, whether he worked in the home or in a factory building, was an essential member of almost every community, for there was hardly a parish in the land that did not have its contingent of spinners and weavers, dyers and fullers. The widespread occurrence of placenames associated with woollen manufacturing bears witness to the importance of wool in the economic history of Britain.First published in 1972, The Wool Textile Industry in Great Britain examines the aspects in the development of the wool textile industry in Britain. Some of the papers included in this book were delivered to the Anthropology section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at the Leeds meeting in 1968.Industrial archaeology, social and economic history, and the history of technology are combined in this study of British life.
