Awaken your senses and make the most out of your next walk in the woods—with Peter Wohlleben, New York Times-bestselling author of The Hidden Life of Trees.“This book will fast-track you into the joys of spending time amongst the trees.”—Tristan Gooley, author of The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs and How to Read Water"You''ll be changed after reading this fine and enchanting book.”—Richard Louv, author of Our Wild Calling and Last Child in the WoodsWhen you walk in the woods, do you use all five senses to explore your surroundings? For most of us, the answer is no—but when we do, a walk in the woods can go from pleasant to immersive and restorative. Forest Walking teaches you how to engage with the forest by decoding nature’s signs and awakening to the ancient past and thrilling present of the ecosystem around you. What can you learn by following the spread of a root, by tasting the tip of a branch, by searching out that bitter almond smell? What creatures can be found in a stream if you turn over a rock—and what is the best way to cross a forest stream, anyway? How can you understand a forest’s history by the feel of the path underfoot, the scars on the trees along the trail, or the play of sunlight through the branches? How can we safely explore the forest at night? What activities can we use to engage children with the forest?Throughout Forest Walking, the authors share experiences and observations from visiting forests across North America: from the rainforests and redwoods of the west coast to the towering white pines of the east, and down to the cypress swamps of the south and up to the boreal forests of the north. With Forest Walking, German forester Peter Wohlleben teams up with his longtime editor, Jane Billinghurst, as the two write their first book together, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. Together, they will teach you how to listen to what the forest is saying, no matter where you live or which trees you plan to visit next.

“Another love letter from Wohlleben to the green world… makes the case for how we should allow forests throughout the world to regrow and in the process help heal not only the climate but us, as well.”—Lydia Millet, Oprah DailyAn illuminating manifesto on ancient forests: how they adapt to climate change by passing their wisdom through generations, and why our future lies in protecting them.In his beloved book The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben revealed astonishing discoveries about the social networks of trees and how they communicate. Now, in The Power of Trees, he turns to their future, with a searing critique of forestry management, tree planting, and the exploitation of old growth forests. As human-caused climate change devastates the planet, forests play a critical role in keeping it habitable. While politicians and business leaders would have us believe that cutting down forests can be offset by mass tree planting, Wohlleben offers a warning: many tree planting campaigns lead to ecological disaster. Not only are these trees more susceptible to disease, flooding, fires, and landslides, we need to understand that forests are more than simply a collection of trees. Instead, they are ecosystems that consist of thousands of species, from animals to fungi and bacteria. The way to save trees, and ourselves? Step aside and let forests—which are naturally better equipped to face environmental challenges—heal themselves. With the warmth and wonder familiar to readers from his previous books, Wohlleben also shares emerging scientific research about how forests shape climates both locally and across continents; that trees adapt to changing environmental conditions through passing knowledge down to their offspring; and how old growth may in fact have the most survival strategies for climate change. At the heart of The Power of Trees lies Wohlleben’s passionate plea: that our survival is dependent on trusting ancient forests, and allowing them to thrive.Published in Partnership with the David Suzuki Institute.

Born in Hastings, England, in 1888, Archibald Stansfeld Belaney spent a solitary childhood under the strict tutelage of two maiden aunts. As a young man, he escaped to Canada, where he whole-heartedly embraced life on the frontier in northern Ontario and Quebec, passing himself off as the son of a Scotsman and a Jicarilla Apache woman. After abandoning two wives, a girlfriend, and three children, he fell in love with Anahareo, a beautiful Iroquois woman. During their tempes-tuous life together, she transformed him from a trapper to a protector of wildlife and he began writing books and magazine articles and making films about his life with his two beavers. Eventually, as Grey Owl, he became famous for his dramatic speaking tours, culminating in two stunningly successful tours in Great Britain and an audience with George VI and his family. Grey Owl is extensively illustrated with archival photographs that span his life, and Jane Billinghurst’s highly readable text is supplemented by engaging and informative extracts from Grey Owl’s own writings. Together, text and photographs provide an intimate look at this enigmatic impostor who delivered an important message of conservation to the world.

According to Jane Billinghurst, men created the idea of the temptress — an irresistible woman bent on bringing them down — to justify the fact that they so often surrender to women, especially in the bedroom. In this fascinating study, she examines this vision in history, mythology, in the Bible, artwork, and film. She traces the evolution of the temptress from an almost demonic presence in folklore to current in-your-face performers like Madonna. The changing image of the temptress reflects the ebb and flow of men''s fears and fantasies, as well as women''s self-possession and power. When men feel threatened by women''s control, temptresses are seen as dangerous. When there is a lull in the battle of the sexes, these women become objects of fantasies. Billinghurst makes the case that when men begin to accept women as equals, the figure of the temptress will serve to accommodate both male and female desires.
