China’s Greater Bay Area (GBA) – previously referred to as the Pearl River Delta – is one of the world’s largest mega-city regions and China’s foremost technological, economic, social and cultural node. Patchell integrates agglomeration concepts with the GBA’s distinctive features to explain the region’s rise, innovativeness, and resilience. He reveals how the GBA works as differentiated and interdependent systems, providing a window into the GBA and China, while also providing the basis for a comparative approach to mega-cities and mega-regions.Key topics discussed in the book include:The early development of the GBA, its mix of indigenous and exogenous investments and expertise and the forces that compelled its upgrading from process manufacturingThe regional strengths in clusters, transportation networks and regional innovation systemThe role of multi-level governance in balancing national directives, municipal autonomy and regional complementaritiesConsequences of the GBA’s agglomeration for land allocation, planning, social structure and mobility, communities, sustainable development and resilience for the futureWritten in an accessible yet rigorous manner, this textbook is ideal for a course on this important region, for comparative courses on agglomeration and large-scale urban development and for people wanting a greater understanding of urban processes and China.

Aligned with global trends in post-industrialization, the economy of Metro Vancouver is changing, but along its own trajectory. The focus is shifting away from resource-based activities to local entrepreneurial initiatives across a remarkable range of industries, from software to craft beer, biopharmaceuticals to mountain bikes. This evolution is being shaped by local business and the city's location on the national and global periphery. The Thin Edge of Innovation focusses on the performance of signature businesses in these entrepreneurial sectors to grow and foster industrial clusters and integrate with the global economy. The contributors give a mixed report card to this economic transition. Within Metro Vancouver, innovation has stimulated economic diversification and promises to deliver high-income jobs. But this diversification has also been thinly spread and lacks deep local roots or dominant anchor companies. This constructive study examines the distinctive opportunities facing Metro Vancouver. Despite challenges, it reveals a region with undoubted potential for sustained, broadly beneficial local development

The wine industry appears to be an anomaly within the modern global economy. Thousands of small companies provide a vast variety of highly differentiated products and compete successfully with multinational corporations. Using case studies from Bordeaux, Napa Valley and Chianti Classico, this book argues that rather than being a vestige or a serendipitous phenomenon, this variety results from a sophisticated alternative organization of production. Integrating differentiation and branding into Ostrom's common pool resource theory, Jerry Patchell shows how winegrowers in a territory can use self-governance to protect and promote their common reputation while enhancing each producer's ability to differentiate their wines and build their own brand. Bordeaux, Napa, and Chianti Classico share several common challenges, but develop a set of strategies and tools appropriate to their markets and regulatory contexts.
