This title brings together in one volume 12 essays (many previously published in Welsh journals) relating to the growth of Protestantism in Wales, from its introduction in the sixteenth century to the Methodist revival two centuries later. Full consideration is given to some of Wales' most prominent individuals during this period, including William Morgan, Maurice Kyffin, John Penry and Lewis Bayly. A variety of sources, including some literary and poetic, are used to further the debate, and the articles are arranged chronologically.

This book comprises of a re-publication of Thomas Matthew's 1910 edition of Welsh documents held in the Archives Nationale of France, together with new introductions to the original work and to its editor. The aim is to make the documents, from the Medieval period relating to Llewelyn Fawr, the Bishop of Menevia and Owain Glyndwr, available to a new audience; to consider them from a contemporary perspective; to update and revise Matthew's original evaluation, and to note recent developments in scholarship in this area. In addition the book will examine the life, work and contribution of Thomas Matthews to Welsh culture through exploration of his Pan-Celtic links and though his contribution to education, Welsh literature and the Arts.

This stimulating and comprehensive study of the period between the establishment of the new Tudor administrative framework and the outbreak of the Civil War offers a well-grounded and fascinating survey of the attitudes, opinions and responses of the gentry to the political and religious circumstances in which they lived. The book discusses the ways in which the gentry, thrust into positions of prominence in the context of the Tudor state, interpreted that status and authority they enjoyed and the power entrusted to them. It surveys the influence which the concept of the ‘island empire’ had on attitudes to public roles and duties, and traces the extent to which loyalties to the Crown and to kindred groupings affected the image projected by the gentry in their political, religious and domestic roles. The book is given an added dimension by a consideration of gentry attitudes in Wales in the context of the humanist ideas current in Europe. This is a mature study based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, material from which has been successfully integrated into the text. It offers an insight into the perceptions and assumptions of an élite culture at a crucial time in that culture’s development.
