Do you wonder why some people you know hold theological and political views that blow your mind but they find quite reasonable? Today, Christians are at odds over how to understand the Bible, atonement, and salvation of non-Christians. They are also polarized over issues such as same-gender marriage, income inequality, and health care. Two social science models, Nurturant and Authoritative, explain this divide. Values are at the heart of our disagreements. Nurturants prize empathy and cooperation while Authoritatives cherish obedience to law and order. Each group has distinct core values and these lead them to embrace different theological, moral, and political views. This book explains the divide and makes the case that Jesus embodied the Nurturant way of life. He modeled empathy, grace, forgiveness, and care for those beyond his own tribe. The Nurturant and Authoritative approaches have competed for thousands of years but contemporary research shows that the Nurturant way of life produces better mental and spiritual health as well as superior communities in which to live.

The disaster film taps into our fear of events beyond our control, ones that are often rooted in real-life experience, making the genre a particularly potent mixture of entertainment and grounded events. Studying Disaster Films provides a comprehensive introduction to a sub-genre that has flourished since the 1970s, fully accounting for the genre's origins and focusing on key films, including Airport, The Towering Inferno, The Day After Tomorrow, and, most recently, Cloverfield. Each case study presents a complete examination of the film, covering production, distribution, and marketing, and tackles such major critical areas as close textual analysis of scenes, issues of representation ,and critical reaction. Within this context, The Day After Tomorrow and Cloverfield are examined as products of current moral panics. There is also a consideration of "reality" disaster films, such as United 93. Written in a lively manner, this volume synthesizes central film and media concepts, affording the reader a thorough overview of the sub-genre.

What would a theory of adaptation look like if it was constructed around literary games rather than novels on film? Bridging disciplinary gaps between adaptation studies, game scholarship, and literary theory, this book presents a framework for understanding adaptations as dynamic systems of experience whose meaning arises from the playful interactions between their formal and intertextual components. Such an approach not only reframes the disciplinary ghosts that haunt each field – the intractable concept of “fidelity criticism” in adaptation studies and games studies’ perennial “ludology/narratology debate” – but also provides new tools with which to examine the under-theorized phenomenon of games based on literary works. Whether it is a Shakespearian choose-your-own-adventure book, a text-adventure version of The Hobbit, a Jane Austen roleplaying game, or an immersive first-person simulation of Thoreau’s Walden, literary game adaptations are uniquely suited to teach us how to play with texts and culture in our hypermediated digital world.
