Paul is known as a theologian, and indeed his writings yield rich theological insights. But Paul was foremost a missionary and a pastor who wrote to real people and churches. In this fresh approach to Pauline theology, respected scholar Joshua Jipp brings Paul''s pastoral concerns to the fore, specifically his concern for human flourishing in his congregations. Jipp argues that Paul''s writings are best understood as invitations to a particular way of life, one that is oriented toward the supreme good of experiencing life in God through participation in Christ. For Paul, Christ epitomizes the good life and enables others to live it. While analyzing Paul''s thought through this lens of well-being and flourishing, Jipp introduces conversation partners as points of comparison and contrast. He interacts with ancient philosophy and modern positive psychology, both of which also address "the good life."This important and substantial contribution to Pauline studies covers issues such as transcendence, suffering and death, relationships, pursuit of Christian virtue, and moral agency. It will be a valuable resource for all students of Paul. Now in paperback.

The book of Acts tells the story of what happened after the death and resurrection of Jesus. The book is filled with adventure and entertainment as Acts narrates God''s activity among his people and the world. In this book I explore one way of reading Acts that attends closely to the plotline of the book and seek to invite readers into the story that Acts tells. Along the way, I examine some of the most important themes of Acts, including divine activity, the extension of the gospel to surprising people in surprising ways, conflict and congruence between the gospel and the broader world, and the ongoing importance of Israel as God''s people. While there are many excellent reasons to read Acts, I reflect too upon the theological and ethical vision of Acts for those who read this book as Christian Scripture.

Tyrants show up everywhere. In the workplace. In the pulpit. At home. And, if we are honest, in our own hearts. In a culture that rewards charisma and results over character, how can Christians resist the temptation to lead like the world? In How (Not) to Be a Tyrant, biblical scholar Joshua W. Jipp turns to ten of the Bible's most infamous rulers for guidance--by showing us what not to do. From Pharaoh's greed to Pilate's cowardice, each chapter contrasts a scriptural example of destructive power with Jesus's radically different way of leading with integrity, mercy, and sacrificial love.Readers will learn to· reject fear and manipulation tactics;· apply Scripture's warnings to modern challenges; and· practice humility, mercy, and justice in any setting. This short yet eye-opening book is essential reading for Christians who want to exert positive influence in every sphere of life.

Divine Visitations and Hospitality to Strangers in Luke-Acts
An Interpretation of the Malta Episode in Acts 28:1-10

This study presents a coherent interpretation of the Malta episode by arguing that Acts 28:1-10 narrates a theoxeny, that is, an account of unknowing hospitality to a god which results in the establishment of a fictive kinship relationship between the Maltese barbarians and Paul and his God. In light of the connection between hospitality and piety to the gods in the ancient Mediterranean, Luke ends his second volume in this manner to portray Gentile hospitality as the appropriate response to Paul’s message of God’s salvation -- a response that portrays them as hospitable exemplars within the Lukan narrative and contrasts them with the Roman Jews who reject Paul and his message.
