Introducing the dynamic study of a literary period stretching from 1900 to the Second World War, the book reflects the exciting mix of European avant-garde, writers of the Harlem Renaissance and regional voices within Britain. Three distinct sections explore the major concepts, themes and issues that characterise the literature.

The Manifesto Handbook describes the hidden life of an undervalued genre: the conduit for declarations of principle, advertisements for new “isms,” and provocations in pamphlet form. Often physically slight and small in scale, the manifesto is always grand in style and ambition. A bold, charismatic genre, it has founded some of the most important and revolutionary movements in modern history, from the declaration of wars and the birth of nations to the launch of countless social, political and artistic movements worldwide. Julian Hanna provides a brief genealogy of the genre, analyses its complex speaking position, traces the material process of manifesto making from production to dissemination, unpacks its extremist underbelly, and follows the twenty-first century resurgence of the manifesto as a re-politicised and reinvigorated digital form.

The book Beyond Speculative Design: Past – Present – Future consists of six main sections. After the introduction, there is a brief history of speculation in radically different contexts, followed by a broad overview of speculative design practice and education. From there we dive into speculative design approaches, methods, and tools through a series of detailed case studies written by the practitioners themselves. A summary of critical views on speculative practice over the past two decades follows, and we conclude with a suggestion of future paths and a list of guidelines (towards good practice) for both educators and speculative designers. We hope that this book will provide newcomers with a thorough introduction to the past, present and future of speculative design and related approaches. Experienced practitioners will have the opportunity to check in and learn more about diverse approaches, methods and tools, as well as case studies; some of which – due to the radical heterogeneity and interdisciplinary of the field – they may not have previously been aware of. Educators will find a wealth of guidelines, tools, case studies and other sources of inspiration, while students will benefit from a comprehensive and multifaceted overview of the speculative design landscape, across Europe and beyond. Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things.Darwin called the Galápagos archipelago “a little world within itself,” unaffected by humans and set on its own evolutionary path – strange, diverse, and unique. Islands are repositories of unique cultures and ways of living, seed banks built up in relative isolation. Island is an archipelago of ideas, drawing from research and first-hand experience living, working, and traveling to islands as far afield as Madeira and Cape Verde, Orkney and Svalbard, the Aran Islands and the Gulf Islands, Hong Kong and Manhattan. Islands have long been viewed as both paradise and prison – we project onto them our deepest desires for freedom and escape, but also our greatest fears of forced isolation. This book asks: what can islands teach us about living sustainably, being alone or coexisting with others, coping with uncertainty, and making do?Island explores these and other questions and ideas, but is constructed above all from the stories and experiences gathered during a lifetime of island hopping.Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.
