Imperial China meets Edwardian England in this epic story of loves lost and gained, set during the aftermath of the Opium Wars. Best friends Jiali and Wu Fang know that no man is a match for them. In their small harbour town of Fudi, they practise sword fighting, write couplets to one another, and strut around dressed as men. Jiali is a renowned poet and Wu Fang is going to be China’s first female surgeon. But when Wu Fang returns from medical training in Japan, she is horrified to hear of Jiali’s marriage to a man who cannot even match her couplets, and confused by her intense feelings of jealousy towards her friend’s new husband, Yanbu. Ocean man Charles has arrived in Fudi to start a new life. He eschews the company of his fellow foreigners, preferring to spend time with new colleague Yanbu, his wife, Jiali, and her friend, Wu Fang. Over the course of several months, he grows close to them all, in increasingly confusing ways, but what will happen when he is forced to choose between his country and his friends? As tensions between the Manchu rulers and the people rise, and foreign battleships gather out to sea, loyalties will be tested in more ways than Jiali, Wu Fang, Yanbu, and Charles can possibly imagine.

Since its launch in late 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has become a significant factor in shaping China's economic and diplomatic relations with the world. China's increasing clout presents opportunities as well as challenges, especially for the developing economies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) which constitute major sites for investment and trade alongside the BRI routes. This edited volume examines whether and to what extent China's economic ascendancy has impacted the proposed ASEAN Economic Community and the respective nations in the region. It deals with this question by grounding the analysis along three themes — institutions at a regional level, industry/sector, and particular ASEAN countries' economic relationship with China. Sixteen articles are presented to illuminate the state of affairs at the regional level and in specific ASEAN economies. They point to the importance of managing trade and investment flows stemming from China's increasingly sophisticated national firms. This in turn hinges on forging 'rules of the game' at both the multilateral and bilateral levels, which potentially leads to mutually beneficial industrialization and long-term wealth creation. The Political Economy of Regionalism, Trade, and Infrastructure will be of great interest to scholars of political economy and industrial policy in East Asia, as well as to scholars and policy professionals analyzing approaches to development strategy more broadly.

In a world of increasingly interconnected economies, the shift toward deeper regional cooperation has become a defining feature of modern trade relations. One of the most significant manifestations of this trend is the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), an agreement that encompasses key players in the Asia- Pacific region, including China and the ten ASEAN countries. This book is a collaboration between Nanyang Centre for Public Administration (NCPA), Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) and Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship (LYCLF), explores the evolution of this collaboration, with a particular focus on ASEAN centrality, its impact on global value chains and the broader economic landscape. This book is divided into three themes: Regional Integration and Connectivity of ASEAN, Building of the ASEAN Community through ASEAN-China Economic Cooperation, and Exporting Member States' Role in Regional Integration and Development, written with the goal of offering a thorough analysis of RCEP's role in reshaping the dynamics of trade and commerce in the region. It presents an in-depth look at how this partnership impacts the global value chain and offers fresh insights for academics, business leaders, and policy makers alike.
