Manny Vega's art can be found in the form of mosaics and murals adorning street walls, subway stations, cultural centres, and business facades throughout New York's East Harlem. Much of his work celebrates important figures-particularly women-in the history of the Puerto Rican and Latinx communities. Dubbed "Byzantine Hip-Hop" for its uncompromising technical command, Vega's aesthetic encompasses ancient Mediterranean mosaic-making and the electrifying lines of hyper-detailed Sharpie pen-and-ink drawings.Richly illustrated with over 100 artworks, 60 other comparative images, and 10 opener images, this volume covers the full range of Vega's artistic output, from carefully crafted mosaics, including female figures and stylized album covers, to prints and works on paper, dating from the 1980s. Vega's art has been deeply inspired by the Afro-Brazilian spiritual practices of Candomble, which combines African, Roman Catholic, and indigenous Brazilian religions, which, along with the neighborhood of El Barrio, and music, has been an anchor of Vega's visual lexicon. His worldview is colorful, danceable, passionately spiritual, and complex whilst also being accessible.

The Chigorin Variation is one of the oldest variations of the Ruy Lopez, ‘in- vented’ (according to my database) at the Monte Carlo tournament in 1902 by Carl Schlechter in his game versus Siegbert Tarrasch.Doing our research for this book I was surprised to discover that in the early years of the development of the Chigorin Variation, Black often intentionally kept his king in the centre by opting for 8...Na5 9. Bc2 c5 instead of 8...0-0, trying to be flexible and keeping extra options. The drawback was that White was not obliged to spend time on h2-h3, as he was on 9.h3 in a regular move or- der. Nevertheless this unusual more order was tried with Black by Capablanca, Lasker, Botvinnik, Euwe, Rubinstein and Reshevsky, amongst others. How- ever, sometime in the late 1940s, this flexible plan more or less disappeared from Grandmaster practice, so I did not include it in the games in this book.
