American economic history describes the transition of a handful of struggling settlements on the Atlantic seaboard into the nation with the most successful economy in the world today. As the economy has developed, so have the methods used by economic historians to analyze the process. Interest in economic history has sharply increased in recent years among the public, policy-makers, and in the academy. The current economic turmoil, calling forth comparisons with the Great Depression of the 1930s, is in part responsible for the surge in interest among the public and in policy circles. It has also stimulated greater scholarly research into past financial crises, the multiplier effects of fiscal and monetary policy, the dynamics of the housing market, and international economic cooperation and conflict. Other pressing policy issues -- including the impending retirement of the Baby-Boom generation, the ongoing expansion of the healthcare sector, and the environmental challenges imposed by global climate change -- have further increased demand for the long-run perspective given by economic history. Confronting this need, The Oxford Handbook of American Economic History affords access to the latest research on the crucial events, themes, and legacies of America's economic history -- from colonial America, to the Civil War, up to present day. More than fifty contributors address topics as wide-ranging as immigration, agriculture, and urbanization. Over its two volumes, this handbook gives readers not only a comprhensive look at where the field of American economic history currently stands but where it is headed in the years to come.

This volume marks fifty years of an innovative approach to writing economic history often called "The Cliometrics Revolution." The book presents memoirs of personal development, intellectual lives and influences, new lines of historical research, long-standing debates, a growing international scholarly community, and the contingencies that guide and re-direct academic careers. In conversation with cliometricians of the next generation, 25 pioneering scholars reflect on changes in the practice of economic history they have observed and have helped to bring about, examining the rise of Western economies and their economic interrelationships, and the impact of modern economic growth on human health, mortality and even happiness. The conversations presented here are engaging, informative and – more often than one might expect – humorous. Together with a framework provided by the editors, they tell a tale of how cliometricians, their allies and their critics, have helped to transform what we know about the economic past.

Rich in quantitative techniques and economic theory, American Economic History demonstrates how understanding our past illuminates today’s economic issues. With engaging language, this text walks readers through four centuries of political, social, and economic history, focusing on laws and institutions while emphasizing current economic topics.Adopting an analytical approach, the ninth edition has been heavily updated to incorporate new literature and reflect modern economic historians' tools and methodologies. Coverage of slavery, population growth, migration, the Great Depression, the New Deal, wartime prosperity, and the new millennium has been expanded and revised. A new chapter examines the Great Recession and its aftermath. The book also includes a discussion of econometrics and causal inference, which has become a critical tool in the toolbox of economic historians. Teaching support includes instructor resources, such as PowerPoint slides, a test bank, and a range of cases, providing students with the opportunity to work with real data.Using minimal math and assuming little previous background in economics or history, this classic text suits all study levels. Bridging historical analysis with contemporary economic understanding, it simplifies complex concepts, making them accessible to everyone – from first-year students all the way through to economics majors.
