This book by Magdalene Winsten contains 230 high-quality annotated reproductions of paintings drawings and etchings by Anders Zorn. He was one of Sweden’s foremost artists who obtained international success as a painter, sculptor and printmaker. His incisive ability to depict the individual character of his model is famous. The model''s surroundings were important; Zorn believed that a portrait should be painted in an environment that was natural for the model. An artificial studio environment was not to his taste. The international esteem Zorn received was not based solely on his paintings but he was an exquisite etcher as well. He had worked with this technique since 1882. Zorn produced 289 etchings, a number of which are very well known, among them the portrait of Ernest Renan (1892), August Rodin (1906) and August Strindberg (1910). Zorn admired and collected the etched works of Rembrandt and considered him to be his artistic forefather in this particular medium.

This book by Magdalene Winsten contains 162 high-quality annotated reproductions of paintings and drawings by Hieronymus Bosch. He was an Early Netherlander painter of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Many of his works depict sin and human moral failings. Bosch used images of demons, half-human animals and machines to evoke fear and confusion to portray the evil of man. His works contain complex, highly original, imaginative, and dense use of symbolic figures and iconography, some of which was obscure even in his own time. The correct number of Bosch''s existing artworks has been a topic of substantial dispute. He signed only 7 of his paintings, and there is doubt whether every one the paintings on one occasion ascribed to him were in fact from his hand. In adding up, his technique was very high-ranking, and was extensively imitated by his various followers. Nowadays no more than 25 masterpieces are definitively credited to him.
