Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 56%, Edinburgh Napier University (University), language: English, abstract: The aim of this assignment is to identify political and cultural risks in Newly Industrialised Economies that means in foreign markets in developing countries. Newly Industrialized Countries (NICs) are still more advanced than countries in the third world or less developed countries. There is not a clear definition for the status of such countries but you can find four main equal characteristics in these countries. Firstly, there is a recent industrialisation that means there is a movement from agriculture to industry. Second there are recent reforms that allow a greater political liberalisation and democracy. You can see increased social freedoms and civil rights and finally there is an increasingly open economy that allows free trade with neighbour countries. NICs often receive support from nongovernmental organisations such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO). [2] As your can see in the case "e;Qualcomm's Chinese Odyssey"e; there can be some difficulties to enter such a Newly Industrialised Country. Qualcomm had to try several times to launch its CDMA technology in China. All in all it took the company more than five years to get the contract signed. Difficulties to enter a foreign market could either be political or cultural.

Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 70% = 1,3, Edinburgh Napier University, language: English, abstract: Ice House Toys is a company which consists of five shops and one mail-order business. The mail-order operations are situated in a warehouse in Bristol. This building consists three floors, each 1200 square metres. Every year Ice House Toys send three catalogues with about 300 different toys and games, all manufactured in UK, Europe and the Far East. The major of this catalogues is the Christmas catalogue which is sent to 160,000 customers resulting in 22,600 orders with an average order value of GBP42. The winter and spring catalogues are sent to 90,000 customers. This results in 6,900 orders with an average order value of GBP23. The stock for the Christmas sales is ordered by the end of July and received in two phases. 75 percent arrives in the first week of October and filled the stock areas to capacity. The remaining orders come after the first 2,500 orders have been processed in the fourth week of November. In 1999, stock with a resale value of GBP1.1m was ordered. The mail-order operation is divided into three stages: recording, assembly and packing and dispatch. Robin Baker, the Managing Director of Ice House Toys, plans three main changes for the mail-order operation. Firstly, he will do an agreement with a company which sells upmarket children s clothes. This will lead to 30,000 new names and addresses of customers. Secondly, Ice House Toys will spend further 18,000 on advertising because each 1,000 led to 190 additional orders in the past. And the last future change will be the newly created website. On this the user can find detailed description and photographs of each item. The ordering will be easier because you will have a virtual shopping basket and send your order online to the company. The user has not to print the descriptions and codes. In the trial period the customer s average order value was 60. Ice House Toys think that five per cent of their existing users will use this service.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Sport - Theory and Practice, grade: 62%=2,0, Edinburgh Napier University, course: Scottish Culture and Society, language: English, abstract: This report is about the sport "e;Ultimate Frisbee"e; which is not known so well as for example soccer or rugby. However it is played all over the world by a lot of people, mostly students. In this essay there will be some general facts about Frisbee and a comparison between the sport in Germany and Scotland especially between my hometown Leipzig and Edinburgh. In 1968 Joel Silver, who nowadays is one of the most prolific and successful producers of motion pictures such as the Matrix trilogy, introduced his idea of Ultimate Frisbee to the Columbia High School student council in Maplewood New Jersey, USA. In the next year the first game was played between two groups of students. The first and second sets of rules were written in 1970 by Joel Silver, Buzzy Hellring and Jon Hines. The first organised tournament, The National Collegiate Championships, was played on April 25th in 1975. Eight teams took part in a tournament in Yale. In 1983, the first true World Ultimate Championship was held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The European countries were represented by national teams. In 1989, ultimate was shown as an exhibition sport during the World Games in Karlsruhe, West Germany. In 2001, ultimate was included as a medal sport in the World Games in Akita, Japan. Six countries were invited to compete based on their finishes in the WFDF 2000 World Ultimate Championship in Germany. Canada won the World Games gold medal with an overtime victory over the United States. Ultimate is now played by an estimated 100,000 players in over 40 countries, with the Ultimate Players Association in the US having over 13,000 members. The 2002 WUCC in Hawaii was the largest Ultimate meet to date, with over 2,300 players and 120 teams from 24 countries participating.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Tourism - Miscellaneous, grade: 69%=1,7, Edinburgh Napier University, language: English, abstract: Basically, this report is about planning an incentive for 25 employees of a company situated in Edinburgh which wants to reward their employees for their good work and sales achievements. The event will last one day and include a fine dining e xperience as well as an entertainment event afterwards. Furthermore, there is also an overnight stay included and because the incentive will take place at a weekend the company invites also the partners of the 25 employees which mean the maximum number of participants will not exceed 45 (plus the CEO and the manager of the sales department) because not each employee has a partner. The event will take place in Perthshire, Central Scotland which is about an hour away from Edinburgh and easy to access. However, the company will hire a coach for the participants which is offered by the venue itself. Massey (2000) states that common sense is the most important quality for conference and incentive organisers which should be considered by addressing the five W s of event planning: Why the event is hold? Therefore, there will be a closer look at several aspects such as the venue, the event programme, additional facilities, a cost analysis and the marketing of the event. At the end of that paper there will be a justification of why the event planned is appropriate for the event selected.

Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Psychology - Work, Business, Organisation, grade: 53%=2,7, Edinburgh Napier University, course: Work Psychology, language: English, abstract: "e;Fitting square pegs into square holes and round pegs into round holes."e; (Lorna McKinnon, freelance journalist)The history of test development goes back to 400 BC when Hippocrates attempted to define four basic temperament types: sanguine, melancholic, choleric, phlegmatic. But his method and numerous other attempts were hardly scientific. The first attempt to scientifically measure the differences between individual mental abilities was made by Sir Francis Galton in the 19th Century [ ] he devised a system which would allow an individual's abilities to be compared to those of others - an idea on which we rely heavily today. (Healy)In the 1950 s Prof. Alec Rodger created the definition fitting the man to the job nowadays more known as fitting the person to the job which exactly describes the concern of a psychometric test. These tests are more and more in use for the selection process in companies. Consequently, in this essay advantages as well as disadvantages of psychometric tests will be discussed. Therefore, there will be a critical analysis whether psychometric tests are an effective method of matching people to the job.
