Globally Competent Governance explores promising policies and practices developed by local governments and other community leaders across the United States and beyond in their efforts to build welcoming and inclusive communities and globally competent governments.Cities of the future, be they large, regional metropolitan centers of commerce and political power, regional hubs that service central metropolitan regions, or smaller suburban or rural centers that cater to agriculture or regional commerce, will continue to evolve. Globalization and global mobility have greatly increased the cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity in cities and communities around the globe and demand local governments build welcoming and inclusive communities for all residents, particularly newcomers. Leaders, both in and out of government, must be prepared to respond to changing needs and manage any potential challenges this may create. To better understand what local officials are facing and what they are doing to manage change, the author presents data collected through surveys and individual interviews of local officials and other community influencers. Based on these findings, the book analyzes the current state of cities and makes policy recommendations for moving forward. This book will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and academics in the fields of public policy, governance, immigration, community engagement, social welfare, and political science, as well as professionals in government and nongovernmental organizations. It will also interest professionals working with immigrants and in immigration policy.

Global Public Leadership for an Inclusive and Innovative Future analyzes the role leadership plays in balancing the competing forces of economic and social integration and the potential threats to sovereignty and cultural identity that result from globalization. This book argues that the current globalization moment is better understood not through the contested and often oversimplified notion of “deglobalization”, but as Globalization 4.1, a phase characterized by resistance to, and recalibration of, some of the negative consequences of global interconnection and interdependence. As the authors note, public skepticism toward major technological transformations is not new; each prior phase of globalization has its own forms of pushback. What distinguishes the present moment is that the very technological advances associated with Globalization 4.0, along with the social, economic, and political disruptions they have produced, have equipped critics with powerful tools to mobilize growingsegments of the population. Across diverse national contexts, more people are questioning the benefits of deepening global integration and expressing concern over perceived losses of sovereignty, cultural identity, and community cohesion. Organizational leaders must be aware of these trends affecting the macro contexts of leadership as they seek opportunities for economic prosperity, collective well-being, and environmental viability. These multifaceted and complex global issues affect all individuals, organizations, and societies. Therefore, public leaders need global competency to improve policies, programs, and services for greater inclusion, justice, and sustainability in local and global communities. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of political science, organizational innovation, globalization, sociology, and public governance.

Global Leadership for a Sustainable Future facilitates a global conversation about sustainability leadership theory and praxis in public and non-profit sectors, where leaders are challenged to manage global crisis, make inclusive public policy, act ethically in global affairs, protect human rights, and adapt to digital disruption.Focusing on non-Western global leadership perspectives, authors from a variety of disciplines and professional areas, including higher education, government, international development and public policy, bridge the gap between leadership theory and sustainability. Each chapter delves into how global leaders can navigate complex challenges by integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations. By emphasizing the interconnectedness of these domains, the book provides practical insights for leaders who seek to drive positive change while ensuring long-term sustainability. Equipping leaders to tackle unique regional, cultural, and ecosystem challenges, the authors emphasize equity and inclusion, showing how leaders can empower diverse voices, promote gender equality, and address systemic biases. By focusing on nuanced, culturally sensitive, and inclusive leadership, the book will appeal to those passionate about social justice, equality, and sustainability.

In the United States, government participation in education has traditionally involved guaranteeing public access, public funding, and public governance to achieve accountability, representativeness and equality. This volume discusses the role of broad regimes of local community actors to promote school improvement through greater civic engagement. Taking a historical perspective, this text examines the relationship between government at the federal, state, and local level and local actors both inside the traditional education regime and those stakeholders outside the schools including parents, non-profit organizations, and businesses. It then drills deeper into the role of state legislatures and finally local leadership both inside and outside the schools to promote change, focusing on efforts that include parental choice through tax incentives, charter schools, magnet schools, and school vouchers to achieve accountability, representativeness and equality. The text examines the perceptions and relationships of various actors in urban education reform in numerous cities across the country with special attention dedicated to Chicago, Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin to offer a deeper understanding of the barriers to and opportunities for fostering greater civic capacity and engagement in urban education reform, as well as developing inclusive educational policy.Attention is also given to accountability and measuring success, traditionally defined by high stakes testing which fails to consider non-classroom factors within the community that contribute to student performance. An alternative approach is offered driven by a wholistic accounting of various factors that contribute to school success centered around third-party inspections and accreditation.Providing insight into school reform at the local level, this book will be useful to researchers and students interested in public policy, education policy, urban governance, intergovernmental relations, and educational leadership, as well as teaching professionals, administrators, and local government officials.
