Named One of Fifteen Important Theology Books of 2022, Englewood Review of BooksIt is no secret that isolation is one of the key ailments of our age. But less explored is the way the church as it is frequently practiced contributes to this isolation instead of offering an alternative. With the help of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, this book argues for a renewed vision of the church community as a theological therapy to cultural, moral, and sociological isolation. It offers an account of how familiar church practices, such as Scripture reading, worship, prayer, and eating, contribute to community formation in the body of Christ.

The church changed tremendously in the twentieth century, with new churches emerging and old churches being renewed. This period encompassed the birth of the World Council of Churches, the rise of American evangelicalism, the Second Vatican Council, the coming of age of charismatic Christianity, and more.In this book, Myles Werntz explores the landscape of twentieth-century ecclesiology and shows how the four marks of the church were remade, contested, and reaffirmed in surprising and innovative ways in the course of this turbulent century.Werntz asks what it means to say that the church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic amid so many diverse alternatives. He explains how the many dynamics of the twentieth century posed both theological and ethical challenges for confessing the marks of the church but also what promise comes from expanding our vision of how God might be at work across traditions. Werntz shows that the four marks of the church can help us see what the last century brought and what we might learn from it now. He also provides guidance for the future of the twenty-first century church. The book includes a foreword from Ephraim Radner.

The ambitious and accessible essays collected in this volume were presented by John Howard Yoder during an extensive visit to South America in 1966. Reflecting and also subverting the acknowledged faddish attempt to address the revolutionary nature of Christianity, these lectures provide an illuminating snapshot of Yoder''s vibrant initial encounter with Latin American Christianity. In these lectures, he thematically addresses the shape of the free church, the Christian practice of peace, and the place of the church in the midst of revolution. In a manner that betrays his confidence in the eventual triumph of faithfulness, Yoder concludes that the peace-witnessing free church is, by definition, always the community that is the soul and conscience of our revolutionary age.

David Simon''s The Wire lays out before us a city in which people struggle under the weight of poverty, political corruption, economic despair, educational collapse, and the drug trade. This volume explores the various theological, ethical, and philosophical challenges presented by The Wire. As each season of The Wire unfolds, the moral complexities of life in the city deepen, as the failures of one system have unforeseen effects in other corners of the city. Fleshing out the ongoing tension between the earthly city and the City of God, Corners in the City of God is a theological companion to David Simon''s masterpiece, inviting the reader to wrestle with the implications of belonging fully to the cities of the world, in all of their splendor and tragedy.

People may be more divided than ever. But Howard Thurman says God can still transcend every barrier and heal every wound. Family feuds, church splits, racial tensions, political polarization, systemic injustice, and international conflicts can all be overcome if we keep turning to God.Thurman’s message is rooted in his belief that true spirituality will transcend individualism and alleviate injustice and suffering. As spiritual advisor to civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and James Farmer, Thurman made the connection between faith and action. In these selections from his many books, Thurman reflects on the power of silence, contemplative prayer, the need for community, and the call to “live in the world as it is and still believe in the possibility of redemption.” Whether you are new to his writings or have long admired his work, this little book offers a fresh approach to Thurman’s spiritual vision of reconciliation, justice, and a hope grounded in the transformative work of love in the world.
