An admirable piece of work that will be welcomed by the many scholars who have long recognised the need for an easily accessible copy of the Historia. English Historical ReviewAn admirable piece of work that will be welcomed by the many scholars who have long recognised the need for an easily accessible copy of the Historia. English Historical ReviewGeoffrey of Monmouth's HistoriaRegum Britannie was one of the most influential literary works of the 12th century. It offered a new and allegedly authoritative history of the British from their first colonisation of the island under Brutus until the late 7th century AD; hence its immediate and lasting popularity. The characters which the author introduced to a wider audience have become central figures in English literature, including the most spectacular of Geoffrey's reshapings, the figure of King Arthur. It is Geoffrey's account of Arthur which lies behind almost all subsequent Arthurian Romance. It is hardly surprising that no comprehensive edition of the Historia Regum Britannie as yet exists, because over two hundred manuscripts survive, many of which have never been thoroughly examined. In practical terms, this new edition, based on Bern, Burgerbibliothek, MSD. 568, will make this important text readily availableagain; all emendations to correct scribal errors are clearly indicated.

A critical edition based on the eight known First Variant manuscripts, the prime source of Wace's Roman de Brut. Geoffrey's `history' of the British from their first colonisation of the island under Brutus to the late 7th century AD was one of the most influential works of the 12th century, and introduced to a wider audience central figures in English literature, including King Arthur and King Lear. `Wright's long introduction is a model of meticulousness and thoroughness...a fine study and edition...In a previous review I called Wright's edition of the vulgate text ``an auspicious beginning'' to a series that promised to become the standard scholarly treatment of Geoffrey's Historia...That promise is being kept.' A critical edition and translation of a 13th-century Latin poem from Brittany; a retelling of Geoffrey's History emphasising the tragic side of Britain's decline. The Gesta Regum Britannie, a Latin poem comprising nearly 5,000 hexameters, is a vital but little known witness to the reception of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britannie. Written shortly before the middle of the thirteenth century, the poem is dedicated to Cadioc, bishop of Vannes in Brittany, and so testifies to the Breton reaction to and enthusiasm for Geoffrey's popular pseudo-history. The poem also provides important evidence for the literary culture of thirteenth-century Brittany. Much in the poem is original and this new edition will bring it to a wider audience so that it may be read in conjunction with the more familiar vernacular verse versions of Geoffrey's Historia.NEIL WRIGHTis a SeniorMember of Wolfson College, Cambridge.

The Lincolnshire market town and small port of Boston is nearly a thousand years old, having been founded soon after the Norman Conquest. Located close to The Wash, it flourished in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and exported much of the wool from the Midlands and north of England, which was then the basis of the country’s wealth. In some years it paid more tax than London or any other port, and also had a fair share of international importance. Its medieval wealth allowed it to build one of the largest churches in England, with the tallest tower. Although Boston declined in the later Middle Ages it still served as the local port for Lincolnshire. After the Reformation it became a centre for Puritanism, and in the 1630s its leading citizens emigrated to create a new Boston in New England. From the 1760s to 1840s the town had a second period of great prosperity when it exported grain from Lincolnshire to feed London. In the 1880s a new dock was built, which still flourishes. Today, its medieval street layout remains, along with many buildings from the Georgian period. In this book, author Neil Wright highlights fifty of Boston’s buildings – old and new – to explore the fascinating history of the town. Through a wide range of structures, from churches to pubs and warehouses to windmills, here are the buildings and landmarks that reveal Boston’s development across the centuries.Illustrated throughout, this accessible perspective of the town’s architectural heritage will interest residents and visitors alike.

Boston developed after the Norman Conquest to become one of medieval England's most important ports. It handled the country's major export, wool. From a wide area and imported cloth and luxury goods, bought by the court and wealthy households at the annual Boston Fair, one of the greatest in England. The town's prosperity was reflected in the building of the great church of St Botolph's, still one of the largest in the kingdom, but then the wool trade declined, and Boston with it. After the Reformation the town was incorporated and took over the former manorial and monastic property as well as that of the medieval guilds. Boston became a centre of Puritanism and in the 1630s many leading citizens emigrated to found a new Boston as the capital of Massachusetts.Drainage of the surrounding fens in the late 18th century led to a revival in the town's fortunes. Grain was exported coastwise and inland and the port expanded, with new wharves, banks and warehouses, followed by shipyards and ropewalks, breweries and foundries so that during the first half of the 19th century Boston was the largest town in Lincolnshire. Then the railway arrives in 1848 and took away the trade of the port, causing redundancy and poverty until the construction of the Dock, 30 years later led to a revival based on fishing and foreign trade. The story of the town is very readably told in this new book from an author with unrivalled, detailed knowledge of its history and geography. He makes skilful use of a splendid collection of well-captioned old photographs to add vivid visual impact to his narrative.
