No other floral genus has greater variety and allure than the rose. Utterly deserving of being known as the queen of flowers, roses bloom in an endless variety of shapes, a surprising spectrum of colors, and their perfume is legendary. After 3000 years of cultivation, the rose continues to seduce. Through various locations spanning the globe, this book explores both the nature and culture of the rose, celebrating its beauty, history, and the horticultural art it has inspired. Acclaimed photographer and writer Ngoc Minh Ngo showcases the majestic rose through a dozen acclaimed gardens in England, France, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Japan, as well as the US. Each garden, like its roses, has a unique personality, which is captured through the author s prose and camera lens, highlighting the delight and seduction of this unparalleled flower. Ninfa, outside of Rome considered the most romantic garden in the world is documented in all of its springtime glory, while the Rose Garden of Sakura, Japan, is at its best in autumn. This lusciously photographed book is a dazzling tour-de-force through the history and beauty of the rose in its most beautiful settings.

Italian writer and horticulturist Umberto Pasti s world-famous garden, Rohuna, is set on a stony hillside high above the ocean south of Tangier. Pasti s passion for the wild flora of Tangier and its surrounding region led him to create Rohuna, where he has transplanted thousands of plants rescued from construction sites with the aid of men from the village. After decades of painstaking work, Rohuna has become a living museum. Planted between two small houses is the Garden of Consolation: a series of rooms and terraces with lush vegetation, some rendering homage to the paintings of Rousseau le Douanier, others inspired by invented characters. Surrounding the Garden of Consolation are the Wild Garden and a hillside devoted to the wild flowering bulbs of northern Morocco, where indigenous species of narcissus, iris, crocus, scilla, gladiolus, and others bloom. With its stunning vistas and verdant fields, Rohuna is a true arcadia, a garden of incomparable beauty with the mission to preserve the botanical richness of the region. Captured here in detail by celebrated photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo, the poetic beauty of this special and unique place is lovingly rendered for all the world to see and share.

Preserving and enhancing a property rich in narrative and natural beauty has been a twenty-year obsession for this property s owner. Mavec has called upon a host of well-known garden luminaries to help preserve what began as a farm with a solitary stone house originally owned by the publisher of the Nancy Drew mysteries while making it functional, productive, and beautiful for the twenty-first century. Today, a series of individual gardens rest within a natural hollow surrounded by native woodland, including a broad gathering space defined by whimsical cloud-pruned boxwood hedges, groves of lilacs, and dogwoods and hellebores that entice visitors into early-season walks with delicate color each spring, a stone-walled vegetable and flower garden whose geometry is inspired by medieval monasteries, winding perennial-lined paths, orchards that produce over five hundred pounds of apples each fall, a natural pond brimming with aquatic plants, and an elliptical hillside meadow farmed for hay. All lead intuitively back to the town square, an open area tucked among the dwelling spaces featuring a broad ground-level fountain that clearly identifies it as the true heart of the farm.

Morocco is the antidote for anyone who has grown tired of minimalist design and beige interiors: saturated colors, intricate patterns, striking architecture. Like Doris Duke s tribute to Islamic art and design as embodied in Shangri La, Umberto Pasti s house and garden in Tangier is the perfect example of a well curated Moroccan escape full of museum quality pieces of furniture, luminous textiles, rare tiles and ceramics, and other objets d art worthy of a private gallery. Set in a lovely garden that is practically a botanic refuge, the house offers glimpses of the serene gardens and fountains through windows, archways and loggias, as well as Pasti s scholarly collection of tiles and rare textiles from Africa, the Middle East, and southern Europe. Also on display are highly crafted wooden objects that Pasti has rescued from obscurity and destruction. With evocative text and gorgeous specially commissioned photographs, this book offers a tour through one of the loveliest homes in Tangier complete with an eclectic and cosmopolitan mixture of objects and decor that bring to life the sophisticated fusion of Morocco s multicultural blend of cultures. Anyone interested in interior design and scholarly collecting will be inspired by the masterful photographs of this gracious home and its masterful collection.

New York City is filled to the brim with beautiful, unique green spaces-if you know where to look. From the Church of St. Luke in the Fields in the West Village to the Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm in the Navy Yard, the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in Queens to New York's Chinese Scholar's Garden in Staten Island, celebrated photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo takes readers on a tour of the most exceptional gardens and parks across the five boroughs in this lushly illustrated guidebook. Through Ngoc's beautifully photographed and well-researched profiles, readers will not only discover parks and gardens they never knew existed, but they will also learn the fascinating history of green spaces in New York and about the innovative new projects being undertaken to ensure we all can enjoy them for years to come. Head up to the nearly century-old Met Cloisters to discover a garden filled with plants depicted in the museum's medieval art collection, and an herb garden planted exclusively with species known in the Middle Ages. Then travel to Brooklyn to visit the Gil Hodges Community Garden, a tiny oasis along the Gowanus Canal and a critical piece of the city's green infrastructure: storm water is absorbed, filtered, and diverted to the garden, relieving pressure on the sewer system and thereby protecting the local waterways from contamination. The book features wildlife preserves and community vegetable patches, sprawling old-growth forests and vest-pocket parks of less than five thousand square feet. Each one tells a story, and offers a wonderful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle.
