International migration, the movement of people across international boundaries, has enormous economic, social and cultural implications in both origin and destination countries. It is estimated that some one hundred and eighty million people (three per cent of the world's population) are living in countries in which they were not born. Among these are millions of highly-educated people who moved to developed countries from developing countries that already suffer from low levels of human capital and skilled workers. Moreover, the flow of formal remittances from migrants to their relatives in their countries of birth has exhibited a very rapid and accelerating rate of growth. Estimated to exceed one hundred billion dollars annually, remittances surpass foreign aid and account for the largest source of foreign capital for dozens of countries. This timely volume provides an in-depth examination of the relationship between - and the impacts on - migration, remittances and development. Using new household surveys and census data, the determinants of migration and the impact of migration and remittances on various measures of welfare are analyzed.Other issues discussed include the migration of skilled workers, the impact of international students and skilled migration in the United States, the determinants of internal and international migration from rural areas whilst providing a critical examination of the new 'brain drain' literature.

Policy makers who seek to reduce poverty should implement policies that enable their countries to achieve a higher rate of growth. Examining the relationship between growth and poverty reduction among eight countries in the 1990s and early 2000s, countries with rapid growth saw the most poverty reduction. In contrast, poverty levels rose in many developing countries where growth stagnated or was negative for this period. But growth is more effective in reducing poverty in some countries than in others. This volume provides important lessons about what has and has not worked in these countries to increase the participation of poor households in growth.

This volume introduces the gender dimension in the empirical analyses on the links between trade and poverty. It explores gender disparities and access to education, health, credit and other resources. This study of gender disparities, which has been less prominent in the available literature, can shed some light in the trade and poverty debate and, in turn, may improve policy making.

Equity and growth are central concerns for development. They are often treated as separate questions, both in economic and social analysis and development policy. This separation is neither good theory nor good practice. This book examines the relationship between equity and growth in Mexico. The central thesis is that Mexico's poor growth performance of the last twenty five years is intimately linked to inequity. Specific inequalities in power, wealth, and status have created and sustained economic institutions and polices that both tend to perpetuate these inequalities and are sources of inefficiencies and lack of dynamism in the economy. No Growth without Equity? analyzes this thesis at two levels: first, exploring the links between inequality, interests, and economic growth; second, providing specific examples as to how rent-seeking behavior in key sectors of Mexico's economy produce inefficiencies that are a source of low growth and income concentration. Mexico's growth problem is unlikely to be solved if these underlying inequalities are not tackled; this has large implications for policy design.
