To Paul the traditions from and about Jesus had authority similar to that of the Scriptures: a logion or story served as text for paraphrastic expositions. Such expositions are also seen in John's Gospel. - It is insufficient to discuss 'John and the Synoptics'. A better scope is 'John within early gospel traditions'.- Paul and Philo maintain a cosmic understanding of Jesus and the Jewish people, respectively. Correspondingly, Jesus is seen in cosmological perspective in John's Prologue. Philo illuminates the role of God's logos relative to creation and revelation. - Archaeology testifies to the reliability of John's topographical references. Both John and Philo can combine theological and ideological elaborations with specific geographical references, historical events and religious feasts. The study has brought in material and perspectives which strengthen the view that the Gospel of John was independent of the other three written gospels.

Philo's writings are a comprehensive and important source of late Second Temple Judaism. This volume gives important insights into his exegetical works. The structure of the books and their exegetical ideas are seen here as being closely connected and his writings are analysed against the background of the history, variety and outlook of Alexandrian Jewry. Philo's exegesis is a meeting place between Jewish and Greek notions and ideas; tensions are reflected, such as those between particularism and universalism, between specific biblical and historical earthly events and general macro- and micro-cosmic principles, and between heavenly ascents and interpreted history and eschatology. In addition, glimpses are gained of community life in a Hellenistic Jewish community, especially of issues on the borderline between Jews and their non-Jewish surroundings. New Testament material illuminates Philo's broader Jewish context, and in turn Philo throws light on New Testament backgrounds.

This volume contains a collection of 17 essays on Philo written by Peder Borgen between 1987 and 2018. The first six studies deal with important issues in Philo's religious thought and social world, such as his views on Flaccus, prayers, and his eschatology. The next five essays illustrate how an understanding of Philo can contribute to the interpretation of Paul, especially his Letter to the Galatians. The final six studies deal with the importance of Philo's writings for the interpretation of the Revelation of John, a subject too rarely touched upon in recent scholarship.

This new reference work is the first and only available word index to all the Greek words in the writings of Philo of Alexandria, main fragments included. Designed specifically to aid with research on Philo, this lemmatized and computer-generated concordance lists each Greek word alphabetically, followed by an exhaustive listing of every occurrence of the term within Philo's extensive corpus of extant writings.Based on the four major translations of Philo's writings (Cohn-Wendland, Colson, Petit, and Paramelle) this index eases word study by including contracted words and words with variant spellings into a single listing. It also notes supplementary lemmas and other grammatical variations in brackets after the primary term. The product of the Norwegian Philo Concordance Project begun in the late 1960s by Peder Borgen (University of Trondheim), with development assistance from Kare Fuglseth (University of Trondheim) and Roald Skarsten (University of Bergen), The Philo Index is a must for research and academic libraries and will be indispensable for scholars and students of Philo.A Brill-Eerdmans co-publication
