This insightful volume explores the major challenges facing sports journalism in Australia today, discussing how, in an environment dominated by sports organisations and increasing commercial factors, the role of the sports journalist is being severely compromised.By combining quantitative and qualitative responses from 120 sports journalists with previous research and placing these in the theoretical lenses of field and gatekeeping theories, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the field of Australian sports journalism. Topics discussed include ethical questions in reporting on sports, the role of women in sports journalism, and the increased commercialisation of the field, as well as journalists’ perceptions on sports organisations and the changing access for media. The book also offers suggestions for the future of the industry, and two contemporary conceptual models are developed.Offering important insight into the workings of contemporary sports journalism in Australia, this book is a useful resource for academics and students around the world in the fields of journalism, media, sports and communication.

This book examines the significance of the Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics, taking place in 2032, in the context of the history and future of the Olympic Movement. As an outlier host, Brisbane is an experiment towards a new Olympic and Paralympic future. In an era of rising costs, the Brisbane Games represent a significant shift away from megacities towards a more sustainable future for the Olympics. Drawing on research including media analysis, published interviews and official documents, and considering host cities and nations, legacies, athletes and Olympic history, this book examines the viability of Olympic outliers and asks whether they might develop into the Olympic mainstream. This is an important read for anybody with an interest in the Olympics, sport history, sport media, sport governance and policy, or events.

This book breaks new ground in sports media research by looking in depth at the relatively recent nation-state phenomenon of sportswashing at a time when it is increasingly pervasive in commercial elements of elite sport. High-profile cases of sportswashing have seen states use their economic influence through event planning and sponsorship to distract from poor human rights, climate change or mining-industry issues, and instead seek positive coverage of their countries. The Middle East has been particularly prominent over the past decade, using sport as a vehicle for promotion, with the 2022 World Cup hosted in Qatar, Saudi Arabia financing LIV Golf, and numerous Formula 1 races being held throughout the region. Where the liberal west views these Middle Eastern practices as immoral, the states involved see their role more simply as promotion and nation building. Securing a future where oil may not be the focus is also a reason behind these governments providing more sports events for their people. It is within this context that this project has been developed, presenting a range of perspectives and case studies from scholars across the globe.
