This comprehensive volume explores the political, social, economic and geographical implications of Brexit within the context of an already divided UK state. It demonstrates how support for Brexit not only sharpened differences within England and between the separate nations comprising the UK state, but also reflected how austerity politics, against which the referendum was conducted, impacted differently, with north and south, urban and rural becoming embroiled in the Leave vote. The end of Ulster loyalism? explores the dynamics and divisions within paramilitary groups since the mid-1970s. It details and explains the nature of Loyalist conflict transformation, a key model of transition that is relevant to arenas beyond Northern Ireland. It communicates a history of transition and, at times, regression within the Ulster Volunteer Force, Ulster Defence Association, Loyalist Volunteer Force and Red Hand Commando. It details the internal and external impediments and violence from within regressive elements, the wreckers and spoilers, who aimed to undermine positive peace-building. The book also discusses the nature and extent of loyalist violence and provides a rarely heard Loyalist voice regarding State-led collusion. But divided cities are becoming places within which policy makers and politicians project an image of normality despite the facts of social injustice, victimhood and harm. This book provides a critical theoretical and empirical examination of the ongoing risks impacting the lives of children and young people growing up in the ‘new’ Northern Ireland. It examines, in particular, the problems inherent to some of the most vulnerable and socially marginalised young people in Northern Irish society. Based on a vast array of existing literature, along with empirical research conducted by the authors, the book frames the experience of young people growing up in Northern Ireland within the risk discourse. For many children and young people the proclaimed advantages of living in the ‘new’ Northern Ireland are hidden behind a vast array of additional risks. The book provides detailed analysis of these additional risks and demonstrates that many of these ‘conflict-related’ risks, mask various underlying social and structurally embedded social problems. The book locates debates on transitional societies within the broader issues of marginalisation, poverty, limited lifetime opportunities, criminalisation, stigmatisation and the need for deeper societal engagement, particularly with children and young people. The book draws out the issues young people experience growing up in a transitional society and examines the social, legal and organisational responses to the variety of risks they encounter during their transition into adulthood, when living in a post-conflict society.
