The Libro de Alexandre is an epic poem about the life of Alexander the Great, written by an anonymous Spanish cleric in the thirteenth century. It is the most substantial poem (and almost certainly the first) composed in the learned cuaderna via verse form and provides a unique insight into the intellectual world from which it sprang. The poem conveys the grim message of Alexander's life, the sense of hubris and the horror of his fall from greatness and domination of the world to the bleak obscurity of the grave. As well as relaying the story of a great ancient figure, the poet also comments on the society and political situation of early thirteenth-century Spain. The combination of eras makes this poem strikingly representative of its time.Peter Such and Richard Rabone's edition in the Hispanic Classics series will greatly illuminate this substantial and important text, with a wide-ranging introduction, Spanish text with facing-page English translation and notes.

Sold as a multi-volume set – the individual volumes are not available for purchase.Pero López de Ayala’s Chronicle of King Pedro provides a compelling and richly informative account of the turbulent reign of the notorious but enigmatic fourteenth-century Castilian monarch who came to be known as Pedro el Cruel. It is a vitally important source for our understanding of the history of the Iberian Peninsula during this critical period in its development and of the complex social and political divisions by which the Spanish kingdoms were torn. This three-volume Chronicle gives us a gripping and wide-ranging picture of a period characterized by harsh brutality, conflict and betrayal but at the same time by the ideals of chivalry, memorably personified in figures such as the Black Prince and Bertrand du Guesclin. At its centre is the chilling portrait of King Pedro, a brilliantly constructed image of self-destructive evil. The translation is accompanied by a Spanish text taken from Germán Orduna’s groundbreaking edition and by detailed notes. The introduction explores the background to the Chronicle’s composition and sets López de Ayala’s account against a broad canvas of events in the Spanish kingdoms and beyond. It examines how the chronicler’s subtle artistry was used to create a picture of a deeply flawed monarch which has continued to exercise a profound fascination over the centuries.

The attractive Andalusian town of Priego de Córdoba nestles among the hills of the Sierra Subbética. It has a colourful and varied past: in the Middle Ages it played a prominent role in both Islamic and Christian Spain; it has been the home of a flourishing textile industry and it possesses one of Spain’s most glorious collections of baroque architecture. Today Priego de Córdoba regularly wins prestigious awards for the outstanding quality of its olive oil. Typically Andalusian in some respects, it nevertheless has a unique character fashioned over the centuries. However, in the shadow of spectacular cities like Sevilla, Granada and Córdoba, it is little known outside Spain. This engaging, informative and accessible account charts Priego’s fluctuating fortunes, setting its history against the background of developments at a national level and showing how past events have contributed to the creation of the town as it exists today. This is the first study of Priego to be written in English and is a valuable resource for the historian, tourist or general reader who does not feel confident to tackle the substantial literature which is available on this subject in Spanish.
