This collection of essays is designed to shed light on the issues of imperialism and the transitions to socialism. Written by eighteen contributors, from twelve countries and three continents, it is organized into two main parts. The first section delves into the theoretical aspects, the analysis of which is key for understanding the subject under consideration. The second part of the volume is focused on the examination of practical experiences of socialist transition, more or less advanced and with varying degrees of success, in China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Brazil.
Imperialism and Transitions to Socialism argues that countries wanting to embark on a socialist transition is not only a response to a spirit of justice, but also an answer to the call of reason: it is a question of survival for humanity, and for life. Socialism is not just a word, it is a struggle. It is not an end, but a transition process, long and difficult, that can take many paths towards the liberation of labour from the domination of capital. It is socialism, a society of solidarity, which walks with history.

Spanning three parts, Volume 40 of Research in Political Economy explores themes related to various “trajectories of declining and destructive capitalism” within the framework of contemporary Marxism. Social scientists from ten countries at various stages of their careers work to strengthen Marxism, applying its methods to the interpretation and, above all, the transformation of the world.
The chapters cover five continents and thirteen countries: Germany, Great Britain, France, Spain, Senegal, South Africa, Lebanon, Iran, India, Papua New Guinea, and Chile in the current period or very near past – plus two other countries, China and Cuba, in their more distant past preceding their respective socialist revolutions.
Providing a far-reaching and comprehensive overview of the damaging impact of capitalism across the globe, Trajectories of Declining and Destructive Capitalism confronts economic strategies at a pivotal moment in international politics.

This book provides analytical arguments that demonstrate the necessity to go beyond not only mainstream economics but also, and especially, the capitalist economy itself. It provides a radical critique of mainstream economics, comparing it to an unscientific form of single thought, and applies this criticism to the specific fields of growth, development, the institutions, defense, or the environment. It targets both neoclassical economics and reformist “soft heterodox” currents, from neoinstitutionalists to neo-Keynesians—including Thomas Piketty or Amartya Sen, among others. In doing so, it rejects Keynes’ theories of money, the crisis, and the state. It then offers a Marxist interpretation of the current crisis of capitalism, considering it as a systemic crisis without solutions internal to its own logic and dynamics, and emphasizes the links between this capitalist crisis and imperialist wars, and the destruction of the environment and natural resources by capital. The book concludes by arguing that we must find the necessary theoretical and practical alternatives in a Marxist perspective, advocating for socialist transitions away from the capitalist economy to protect humanity and the environment.

This book presents a comprehensive history of the political economy of Cuba from 1492 to the present day. It chronologically analyses the major economic, social and political transformations that have occurred in Cuba and explores the impact on the country’s development over the long run.
The first section analyses the period from 1492 to 1898, from colonial conquest to the war of independence. The next two sections cover the history of Cuba’s economy and society up to the end of the twentieth century, examining in detail US imperialist domination, guerrilla warfare (1956-1958) and the Cuban Revolution from 1959 to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990-1991. The final part analyses Cuba’s economy and society in transition up to the present day. Written in a comprehensive academic style while maintaining a focus on the perspectives and experience of ordinary citizens throughout, the book will be of interest to a wide readership including scholars of economic history, political and social history, development economics and political economy.

What is money, where does it come from, what is its purpose? Does it increase national and international inequalities? Rémy Herrera’s book analyzes how the changes in the capitalist world system have consolidated, over the last decades, the supremacy of the U.S. dollar, but also how this hegemony has recently been challenged, both by rising State resistance initiatives and by the emergence of crypto-currencies, which raises many questions. Reviewing the situation of each continent, this book invites us to debate the liberation from the dollar domination, as well as the future of the euro, that of the CFA and CFP francs, of the Cuban peso or of the Chinese yuan, among others, but also the means to take in hand our collective future by mastering money.
