This book focuses on the authority and status of the author of Luke-Acts. What authority did he have to write a Gospel, to interpret the Jewish Scriptures and traditions of Israel, to interpret the Jesus traditions, and to update the narrative with a second volume with its interpretation of Paul and the other apostles who appear in the Acts narrative? Rick Strelan constructs the author as a Jewish Priest, examining such issues as writing and orality, authority and tradition, and the status and role of priests. The analysis is set within the context of scholarly opinion about the author, the intended audience and other related issues.

This collection of essays is indicative of the years of research that the author has devoted to the Acts of the Apostles. In a very easy style, some of the intriguing episodes in Acts are understood through the lens of ancient literature and the worldview that is reflected in it. The intention is to try and read them as an early Christian might have heard them even if, from a modern perspective, that reading appears quite strange. It is hoped that the modern reader might be intrigued and even inspired to read Acts again and so to explore its strange events and people even more deeply. More broadly, such an exploration might lead to an appreciation that all writings that many Christians now hold as "e;inspired and authoritative"e; are deeply embedded in an ancient cultural context.

Mark, the shortest of the four gospels, presents Jesus as the Son of God who crosses the religious and social boundaries of his time in order to extend God's rule to include the outsiders and those who are unclean. It continues to challenge readers to follow Christ across the boundaries that separate people. This commentary, like others in the Chi Rho series, uses language that is simple and clear, avoiding technical terms. It gives an explanation of the text that is sound and reliable, easy to understand without being superficial.

This book examines many of the strange events and actions in Acts in the context of the Hellenistic world and from that perspective. These events and actions include the ascension of Jesus, direction by the Spirit, visions, angelophanies, prison escapes and resuscitations of the dead. Many of these events are either avoided in scholarship or are investigated with an agenda other than to understand them for themselves. The book constructs an ancient audience to be one that has a close familiarity with the Septuagint and with other Greek and Latin writings. The culturally-strange events are then interpreted through the lens of these texts.
