Alasdair Gray, author of the modern classics Lanark, Poor Things and 1982, Janine, is without doubt Scotland's greatest living novelist. Since trying (unsuccessfully) to buy him a drink in 1998, Rodge Glass, first tutee and then secretary to the author, takes on the role of biographer, charting Gray's life from unpublished and unrecognised son of a box-maker to septuagenarian "little grey deity" (as Will Self has called him). A Jewish Mancunian Boswell to Gray's Johnson, Glass seamlessly weaves a chronological narrative of his subject's life into his own diary of meeting, getting to know and working with the artist, writer and campaigner, to create a vibrant and wonderfully textured portrait of a literary great.

Joshua dies on his birthday. Joshua dies the day he is born. Joshua lives for three hours. Joshua is alive.Rodge Glass's nephew Joshua died the same day he was born, from a blood condition they both share. This book charts the five years around Joshua's life and death to tell the story of Rodge's attempts to make sense of this loss. Having spent a lifetime using reading and writing to both hide from and face the world, Joshua in the Sky serves as a kind of reckoning, asking the questions: whose life deserves to be remembered? And how?

This book by Rodge Glass, the award-winning novelist, short story writer and biographer, is the first ever detailed assessment of Michel Faber’s life and work across genre and form. It draws on intimate, wide-ranging interviews with the author over a two-year period and investigates previously unexplored archival material, from the Canongate Books records to Faber’s own personal archive, to bring fresh perspectives to light. Glass presents detailed interrogations of unpublished texts, including a novel, A Photograph of Jesus, as well as providing deep dives into Faber’s most celebrated works such as Under the Skin and The Crimson Petal and the White. Known for his hybrid creative-critical approach, Glass uses Faber’s interest in generosity and compassion in writing as a focus for this study. Grouping his works by ‘World’, the book ranges across poetry, short stories, novels and novellas to make an argument for Faber as a writer who has consistently sought to explore narrow emotional territory, that of the human instinct to seek connection with others, even if genuine connection seems unlikely or impossible. Glass draws on individual case studies across Faber’s hugely diverse body of work in a way that will be both- interesting for fans and informative for students of Faber’s writing.

‘An intimate and obsessive book, but one not only for the fans: this is a story about fresh starts and second chances and how to navigate them as an adult’ Mariana Enriquez'Rodge has been absolutely brilliant. He's a big fan but not too close. He was very much a fly on the wall' Brett Anderson'The candid biography of Suede we've all been waiting for' Steve LamacqThe official, intimate and candid biography charting the second act of Suede during their remarkable second act. This year will mark thirty-three years since Suede released their debut eponymous album and sixteen since their glorious and unexpected comeback in 2010.Their two most recent albums - Autofiction in 2022 and Antidepressants in 2025 - both reached number two in the UK charts.Based on exclusive and extensive interviews with the band, their family and friends, As One is an intimate and candid biography of one of the UK’s biggest band’s during the unlikely second act of a career that spans four decades. It is a book that studies the band from close up and afar, written by award-winning author Rodge Glass, who has been granted unprecedented access to the members at home, on stage, backstage, in the studio, rehearsing and promoting over the past three years. It is an honest, long-term interrogation of what it is really like to be in Suede. The book asks difficult questions about how great bands survive and thrive over time, many years after their first flush of success. How do you build back up from nothing? How do you reconnect with your audience, while avoiding simply rehashing old ideas? How do relationships in a band change with time? How do you remake Suede?
