This handbook is intended for faculty and administrators who wish to create a welcoming and safe environment for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students on our campuses. It will help readers, even those who may struggle personally with understanding non-heterosexual identities, gain a clearer understanding of the important issues facing these students. While some students arrive on campus with full clarity about their sexual identities, others may just be discovering their orientations while in our institutions. It is difficult to provide the attention LGBT students need if we do not understand the crises affecting them or how to address them. Each chapter analyzes specific issues affecting these students and offers recommendations or suggestions for change. Some of the areas discussed include: identity development theories, residence halls, career planning, health and counseling centers, HIV/AIDS, and student leadership and organizational development. Non-heterosexual faculty and staff may also find this work useful as they attempt to discover themselves in academic and educational literature.Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students are on our campuses. Chapters within the sections dissect specific issues and, where appropriate, offer recommendations for change. Some of those areas include: identity development theories; residence halls; career planning; health and counseling centers; HIV/AIDS; students with disabilities; same-sex dating and domestic violence; athletics; fraternities; student leadership; speakers' bureaus and safe zone programs; commuter schools and church-related institutions; and Internet resources.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students arrive on campuses every year expecting their voices to be heard, their concerns acknowledged, and their needs met in a welcoming educational environment. The establishment of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Centers on campuses has transformed colleges and universities into places where social justice prevails. This book provides guidelines for establishing and operating LGBT centers or program offices on their own campuses.Subjects include:• The history of LGBT centers in higher education • Needs assessments, proposal development, and types of centers • Issues related to documentation of the LGBT campus population • Starting an LGBT center or office on campus • Hiring center directors • Strategic development for successful action planning • The importance of advisory boards for LGBT centers and programs • Selection and implementation of basic services and programs • Visibility, funding, and staffing issues. This book is a collaborative effort among three colleagues who have spent years working to build the profession of the LGBT Campus Resource Center Director. Colleagues from the LGBT Centers around the country provided many of the case studies and authored several of the chapters.

In this qualitative research project, sixteen lesbian and gay teachers in the Northeast Florida public school system were interviewed about their experiences in their professional settings and how those experiences affected their lives. Although the location is specific, the experiences of the teachers and the findings of the research are applicable to most areas of the United States. An interpretive model was designed to depict the findings of this research based on the experiences of the participants as well as on the related literature. The educators in this study lived and worked in the constant fear that if their sexual orientation were discovered, they would suffer harassment, rejection, and job termination. They courageously opened their hearts and shared their stories so that others might learn. This research is a vehicle for the lives of this silent population and offers recommendations for change based on the stories and experiences of the informants.
