In academics, a research methodology refers to the tool set of methods, practices, procedures and guidelines that a researcher applies to facilitate data collection concerning the research subject. In tourism research, there are commonly agreed-upon elements that must be accounted for by the methodology in order for the research to be taken seriously. In the end, though, every tourism research project has its own unique methodology, as defined by the party overseeing the research. The first element of a tourism research methodology is the working definition of the scope and objective of the research. A research project that lacks this element will be unfocused and sloppy and will not be respected by other scholars. The researcher must justify the project as original and valuable in an academic context by providing a literature review, which summarizes the material available on the subject and demonstrates a need for the current research project. All data collection falls into two categories: quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data collection refers to the practice of obtaining large amounts of statistical information. A tourism research methodology should outline the methods by which such data will be collected. Common quantitative methods for tourism research include surveys, questionnaires and fixed-question interviews that are administered to tourism participants. The book provides a research reference and text for university academics, students, researchers and tourism practitioners involved in all aspects of tourism.

Management accounting provides accounting information to help managers make decisions to manage the business. In short, Financial Accounting is the process of summarizing financial data taken from an organization’s accounting records and publishing in the form of annual (or more frequent) reports for the benefit of people outside the organization. Financial accountancy is governed by both local and international accounting standards. Financial accountants produce financial statements based on Generally Accepted Accounting Principles of a respective country. In particular cases financial statements must be prepared according to the International Financial Reporting Standards. Consistent with other roles in today’s corporation, management accountants have a dual reporting relationship. The book introduces the fundamentals of financial accounting through examples from hotels, restaurants, and clubs. Even managers who feel they are not “numbers people” will easily understand the accounting process and its function in hospitality operations. This means understanding fundamental accounting concepts, developing solid financial analysis abilities, and then applying them to understand and improve the operational performance of their hotel or restaurant.

Globally, the tourism industry is under pressure to adopt more environmentally sound practices. This arose out of concerns that tourism could and often did have negative impacts on the host communities and their environments. Increasing environmental awareness on the part of consumers has served as pressure on hotels to adopt sound environmental practices. Tourists are becoming more discerning, seeking activities, arrangements and experiences which depend crucially on a high quality physical and cultural environment. Studies conducted by the International Hotels Environment Initiative (IHEI) and Accor revealed that 90% of hotel guests preferred to stay in a hotel that cared for the environment. Today, various types of environmental initiatives exist. However, there are no common standards for hotels, so these initiatives are being carried out by the hotels themselves, NGOs, International Organisations and government agencies. Such initiatives have been in the form of publications, certification, awards, ecolabels and codes of conduct. Furthermore, regulation of the tourism industry by governments in the form of planning restrictions, mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and laws relating to business practice has exerted pressure on hotels to adopt sustainable environmental practices. As the hospitality industry grows larger, it is having an increasing effect upon the environment. Aimed at both the student and professional in the industry, this text looks at the issues individuals and businesses need to tackle, such as water usage and waste management.
