The Western Sahara conflict has proven to be one of the most protracted and intractable struggles facing the international community. Pitting local nationalist determination against Moroccan territorial ambitions, the dispute is further complicated by regional tensions with Algeria and the geo-strategic concerns of major global players, including the United States, France, and the territory’s former colonial ruler, Spain. Since the early 1990s, the UN Security Council has failed to find a formula that will delicately balance these interests against Western Sahara’s long-denied right to a self-determination referendum as one of the last UN-recognized colonies. The widely-lauded first edition was the first book-length treatment of the issue in the previous two decades. Zunes and Mundy examined the origins, evolution, and resilience of the Western Sahara conflict, deploying a diverse array of sources and firsthand knowledge of the region gained from multiple research visits. Shifting geographical frames—local, regional, and international—provided for a robust analysis of the stakes involved. With the renewal of the armed conflict, continued diplomatic stalemate, growing waves of nonviolent resistance in the occupied territory, and the recent U.S. recognition of Morocco’s annexation, this new revised and expanded paperback edition brings us up-to-date on a long-forgotten conflict that is finally capturing the world’s attention.

Nations are not helplessif the military decides to stage a coup. On dozens of occasions in recentdecades, even in the face of intimidated political leaders and internationalindifference, civil society has risen up to challenge putschists throughlarge-scale nonviolent direct action and noncooperation. How can anunarmed citizenry mobilize so quickly and defeat a powerful militarycommitted to seizing control of the government? What accounts for thesuccess or failure of nonviolent resistance movements to reverse coups andconsolidate democratic governance? This monograph presents in-depth case studies and analysis intended toimprove our understanding of the strategic utility of civil resistance againstmilitary takeovers; the nature of civil resistance mobilization against coups; therole of civil resistance against coups in countries’ subsequent democratizationefforts (or failure thereof). The 2019 Sudanese revolution constitutes one of the world''s greatest stories of the power of nonviolent resistance. A country which had suffered greatly from decades of horrific statesanctioned violence, misogynistic laws, and longstanding religious, ethnic, and regional divisions, an unstoppable movement emerged out of a population systematically disempowered through decades of dictatorship. Millions of Sudanese took to the streets during waves of protests over an eight-month period beginning in December 2018 in a triumph not just of the human spirit, but of some of the most brilliant strategic thinking by any social movement in history.
This report reviews the chronology of the resistance struggle, the critical role of nonviolent discipline, other factors contributing to the movement''s success, the subsequent political situation, and lessons to be learned. In overcoming such formidable obstacles, the nonviolent pro-democracy struggle in Sudan serves as an inspiration for the entire world.
