Over the last decade, "youth" has become increasingly central to policy, development, media and public debates and conflicts across the world – whether as an ideological symbol, social category or political actor. Set against a backdrop of contemporary political economy, Youth Rising? seeks to understand exactly how and why youth has become such a popular and productive social category and concept. The book provocatively argues that the rise and spread of global neoliberalism has not only led youth to become more politically and symbolically salient, but also to expand to encompass a growing range of ages and individuals of different class, race, ethnic, national and religious backgrounds.Employing both theoretical and historical analysis, authors Mayssoun Sukarieh and Stuart Tannock trace the development of youth within the context of capitalism, where it has long functioned as a category for social control. The book’s chapters critically analyze the growing fears of mass youth unemployment and a "lost generation" that spread around the world in the wake of the global financial crisis. They question as well the relentless focus on youth in the reporting and discussion of recent global protests and uprisings. By helping develop a better understanding of such phenomena and critically and reflexively investigating the very category and identity of youth, Youth Rising? offers a fresh and sobering challenge to the field of youth studies and to widespread claims about the relationship between youth and social change.

This open access book presents a collection of conversations with educators and activists from around the world, who are engaged with practicing and thinking about different forms of radical or alternative education for social change, and who are working in grassroots education spaces, beyond formal schooling and universities. This includes educators working in the areas of community, worker, indigenous, environmental, feminist, anti-colonial, agricultural, liberation, theatre and arts education in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. By bringing together these different perspectives, the book helps to broaden our thinking about what radical education could and should look like in the world today. Young people often work in some of the lowest-paying, lowest-status jobs there are -- in dead end jobs or \u0022McJobs\u0022 in retail, food, and entertainment service sectors. They have lower wages, fewer benefits, less job security, and are less likely to be unionized than any other age group in the workforce. Employers of young workers, by contrast, frequently rank among the world's most powerful corporations. Despite their importance to the service economy, young workers are often ignored or stereotyped by researchers, policymakers, and trade unions. This interview-based study of 95 young unionized fast-food and grocery workers in two cities in the U.S. and Canada presents a detailed account of their experiences in their workplaces and in their unions. These young workers vividly describe their daily tasks of frying, serving, bagging, stocking, and cleaning up, and the pressures from management and customers that surround these tasks. Management control tactics they encounter include video surveillance, drug testing, and monitoring of worker service scripts by mystery shoppers.The workers also document the hazards -- muscle injuries, burns, and robberies -- and the responsibilities of their jobs, including the emotional labor of customer relations. The book suggests that young service sector workers have a distinct workforce identity as \u0022stopgap workers.\u0022 Society, employers, and even some unions often dismiss young workers as not being \u0022real\u0022 workers, since these youths are seen as being in transition between school and \u0022adult\u0022 career forms of employment. The collective activism of unions may offer hope not just for improving service sector work, but for educating young workers and providing them with a voice in shaping their own temporary work conditions.

In an increasingly globalised educational landscape, this book examines whether the principle of educational equality can be applied across nation state borders.
