Burton straddles the River Trent and is famous for being the world capital of the brewing industry, with companies such as Bass, Worthington, Marstons, Allsopps, Ind Coope, Truman Hanbury & Buxton and Salts. Over several hundred years, Burton has been famous for many other industries, including wool from the monks of Burton Abbey, steam locomotives by Baguley, Ricknield cars and lorries, John Port of Soho top hats, and Thornewill & Warham iron foundry and engine works. Today, we have beautiful river walks through the Washlands and the awardwinning Stapenhill Gardens; there are three shopping centres, an arts centre, sports centre, several gyms and lots of good food outlets, along with an assortment of nightlife with pubs and clubs. We also have the national Museum of Brewing, at one time the Bass Museum. All these changes and many more can be seen in Burton upon Trent Through Time.

Burton upon Trent Memories offers a nostalgic look back at the town's past through a selection of postcards, photographs, receipts and adverts from the author's own collection. Burton upon Trent, which straddles the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, is the largest town in the National Forest. 'Burton', as it is known locally, grew up around Burton upon Trent Abbey, which was a major religious centre for Staffordshire in medieval times. In later years, the River Trent Navigation was extended to Burton and, by the early modern period, it had emerged as a bustling market town. Burton has a wealth of fine buildings, including the Town Hall, St Margaret's church and St Paul's, many of which were donated by Michael Bass, who became Lord Burton in the nineteenth century. As its brewing industry assumed importance in the early nineteenth century, the town really started to expand. In its heyday, Burton boasted a dozen or so breweries and was regarded as the international brewing capital of the world. Author Terry Garner invites the reader to step back in time and explore Burton upon Trent's rich and fascinating history.

In the twelfth century the abbots of Burton began to produce beer. The dissolution of the abbey in the sixteenth century saw inns and alehouses appear, with many selling beer brewed on-site. The first recognisable brewery was Benjamin Printon’s, which was established on Horninglow Street around 1708. The Trent & Mersey Canal, built in 1774/75, allowed further expansion to the industry, but it was the coming of the railway in 1839 that led to massive growth – by 1888 there were thirty-one breweries employing over 8,000 men and producing over 3 million barrels a year.In this collection of images, local author and historian Terry Garner illustrates the history of this famous east Staffordshire town and provides a fascinating insight into the many lost breweries that made Burton-on-Trent the brewing capital of the world.
