This is the first comprehensive study in English on the social, institutional and intellectual aspects of traditional Chinese education. The book introduces the Confucian ideal of 'studying for one's own sake', but argues that various intellectual traditions combined to create China's educational legacy. The book studies the development of schools and the examination system, the interaction between state, society and education, and the vicissitudes of the private academies. It examines family education, life of intellectuals, and the conventions of intellectual discourse. It also discusses the formation of the tradition of classical learning, and presents the first detailed account of student movements in traditional China, with an extensive bibliography. While a general survey, this book includes various new ideas and inquiries. It concludes with a critical evaluation of China's rich educational experiences.

This comparative study focuses on the legislative methods and techniques used in 12 countries to give effect to the International Criminal Court. The text covers both common law as well as civil law countries: Argentina; Brazil; South Africa; The Netherlands; Liechtenstein; France; Sweden; Germany; Norway; Italy; Canada; and the UK. The practice of each state forms a chapter focusing on constitutional, sovereign, and criminal issues. Two additional chapters discuss such issues now facing Japan and Mexico. The contributors focus on real issues encountered and methods and techniques actually employed with the purpose of serving as a practical guide to those countries that are still looking for methods to give effect to the Rome Statute. In each case the authors explain why certain legislative approaches were used and why others were not selected. The authors are all experts with years' of experience in the field; most of them participated in preparing the relevant domestic laws and in the making of the Rome Statute.Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

The thirteen essays in this book are up-to-date scholarly reflections on issues related to the mutual understanding and influence between China and Europe during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. The essays touch on the various religious, intellectual, scientific and artistic aspects of the encounter and show that there had been significant interactions of different degrees of success. On religious and intellectual aspects, it is shown that the European understanding of Chinese thought in general and Confucianism in particular was superficial and self-serving. The transfer of science and technology had been more successful, though not without its problems, and the question of how "influence" should be understood is raised. In the realm of art, however, it appears that significant mutual influences occurred. All told, the essays suggest a general conclusion that the higher the position a branch of knowledge occupies in the value hierarchy of a culture, the more difficult it is for the knowledge to become admitted and integrated into the other culture's value system. The papers are results of intense studies by respected scholars from Europe, the United States of America, Korea and China and provide a comprehensive summary of modern interpretations of early Sino-European cultural interactions.
