Dionysius of Halicarnassus: On Thucydides (English Translation) offers an insightful analysis of Thucydides’ work, bringing a fresh perspective to his syntax, style, and historical narrative. This English translation, based on the Greek text of Usener-Radermacher, serves as both a guide for scholars and a resource for students of Thucydides, especially those keen on understanding the nuances of his historical writing. Dionysius' commentary on the History of the Peloponnesian War reveals his deep engagement with the style and technique of Thucydides, focusing on aspects like the use of language, the structure of speeches, and the overall rhetorical approach. Throughout the translation, modern scholarship is interwoven with Dionysius' critiques, offering clarity and further context, making this a valuable resource for anyone looking to explore the complexities of Thucydides’ work. The text also presents a critical examination of the difficulties involved in translating ancient rhetorical terminology and the challenges Dionysius faced when assessing Thucydides' style. Dionysius, while critiquing the structure and style of Thucydides, often places emphasis on his own rhetorical ideals, which were shaped by his era's standards of literary composition. His focus on figures of speech, metaphorical vocabulary, and stylistic precision offers readers a glimpse into the literary criticism practices of ancient Greece and Rome. This edition, through its comprehensive commentary and detailed footnotes, sheds light on the often overlooked aspects of Thucydides' writing and provides insights into the evolution of Greek historiography, making it an indispensable work for both historical and literary scholars. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. W.K. Pritchett, who has previously published studies on the topography of Pausanias, offers two chapters: 1) a study of the periegete's account of the Demosion Sema, some tombs of which were excavated in 1997, and 2) a study of certain aspects of Pausanias' account of Greek religion, particularly the worship of images. The author suggests that two types of defective readings, common in the transmitted text, occur in the record of the Athenian military cemetry, and that simple emendations will remove any change that the record was not based on autopsy. In the second chapter, the focus is on fetishism, the date of early temples, sacred stones, meteorites, trees, Daidalos, xoana, and image worship. There are four indexes. In addition to classicists and archaeologists, students of art-history will find the work of interest.

The author's second volume on Pausanias focuses on a collection of over fifty examples where Pausanias is alleged by modern scholars to have made errors in his topographical descriptions of sites and monuments, debating the pros and cons. He vindicates the Periegetes in most cases, finding his most serious error is duplicated in Strabo and Pliny. Tables are offered of figures where distances are given in stades, leading to the observation that various scholars independently hypothesize that alphabetical numerals, easily corruptable, were used at some stage in the transmission of the text. Following his earlier study of wooden cult statues, called xoana, the author collects examples of other statues of wood where the word is not used, noting that wooden statues of athletes are attested as early as 544 BC. Tables of bronze statues are also presented, leading to the conclusion that, although favored by the Romans as booty in war, many bronzes by famous artists still remained in Greece in the second century of our era. A third chapter is devoted to Pausanias' description of ruins, including towns and temples. The Periegete reported more ruins in Arkadia than in any other province. A final chapter collects Pausanias' record of sixty-one festivals and panegyreis. This book will be of interest to topographers, art-historians, and students of Greek religion.

The thrust of the eighth volume of Professor Pritchett's topographical studies is on Demosthenes' Amphilochian campaign in 426 BC, described in the closing chapters of Thucydides Book III, with suggested identifications for the sites of the battles of Olpai and Idomenai. Included is a commentary on the Thucydidean text, dealing with such problems as Thucydidean seasons, Demosthenes' generalship, and the marching time of armies. This study is followed by a survey of sites in northeastern Akarnania, probably the best preserved walls of any province in Greece. The author argues that these were not "e;open"e; cities in the late fifth and early fourth centuries, offering comments on the use of siegecraft and scalingladders in Greek warfare. The position of gates in several enceintes prove that the road structure in the mountains of Akarnania was quite different from that of modern roads. The volume concludes with a study of sites east of Thermopylai and in the Parnon range.

The Professor Emeritus of Greek at Berkeley offers six original papers, the titles of which are indicative of the contents: - The Alleged Battle of Oinoa. - The General's Exhortations in Greek Warfare. - The General on the Battlefield. - Thucydides and Pylos. - The Roads of Akarnania. - Circumventions of the Thermopylai Pass. These studies are a by-product of Pritchett's studies on Greek military practices and Greek topography, and will be of interest to students of Greek historiography, since all involve problems of text and the veracity of the historians. The three topographical chapters, which are based on extensive autopsy and include some new discoveries, are accompanied with photographs and sketchmaps.
